Newbie Gen 1 Owner Question Roundup Vol 1

I spent Thanksgiving weekend in, around and under my new-to-me '94 and have a whole list of things I want to address but want to first call on the expertise here to narrow down a few things. Thanks all!

    1) My ashtray is broken. What is the difference between the 92-96 ashtray (PN# 4761733) and the 97+ ashtray (PN# 0D221SX8)? I have found that they have two different part numbers but in looking at photos of 1st and 2nd gens I can't see a difference between them. Other than that the 1st gen is impossible to find and the 2nd gen is more easily sourced.

    2) Is the dome light activation switch/sensor in the door latch or the door handle? The passenger side door turns on/off the dome lights upon door open/close as normal, but the driver side will only activate the dome lights when the handle is physically being pulled - they will not remain on after releasing the handle. See the video below:

    3) I plan to replace most of the rubber components as a preventive measure (radiator hoses, serpentine belt, sway bar end links, etc), but am not sure what to do about motor/tranny mounts. It seems that based on historical threads, Woodhouse poly was the way to go, but in the last couple of years it seems like the brand may have been sold and quality of the mounts have changed. Is there a more modern recommendation for replacements poly mounts or am I better off with OEM?

    4) I have noted what appear to be cracks in the paint near the passenger side hood grille - the fiberglass/composite of the hood does not appear to be compromised, and these cracks aren't down near the hood latches where they tend to be from improper hood closing technique. I have read where 1st gens sometimes have "filler expansion" or something to that effect - are these cracks a symptom of that? I'm debating if this is something I need to address by repainting the clamshell or not as the paint otherwise is still in very good condition.

It was difficult to capture a good photo of these, but I tried my best in the below photo/video:

    5) Are these front fender pieces supposed to be split like this or do I need to look into replacements?

    6) Upon final inspection, the previous owner and myself discovered what appears to be mouse/packrat damage at three of the fuel injector wires/connectors. Is there a preferred vendor for OEM (or as close to OEM as possible) replacements for these? It looks like it might take some careful soldering at best or removal of the intake manifold at worst (to have more room to solder leads in).

    7) Lastly...and this is a big one...what the hell does this switch on the right do?

Hi Jon, thanks for the email you sent me! If I understood your note correctly, you deferred to other vendors for the ashtray, cigarette lighter, & fuel injector wiring, hence my questions here - just doing my due diligence to streamline my future orders as much as possible and prevent anyone from being an unpaid research assistant

    1. Maybe Steve Fess can chime in on this one (he could just compare them)

    2. I will have to go look and get back to you.

    3. Per Chuck Tator, if you aren’t racing use factory engine isolators (the originals have lasted this long). The poly mounts will vibrate everything more. A Poly tranny mount is fine.

    4. Can’t help you here... maybe one of those photos were taken with hot chicks sitting on the hood cracked it? Who knows buddy! Repaint if it bothers ya.. I guess.

    5. Yep split is normal and they are tough to find when they wear out. (Unless you are 99rt or Dave6666)

6.Several guys Scharf, Larry, X2, I see you spoke with JonB you could also try Chuck Tator maybe he can point ya in the right direction.

    7. As stated above it’s for the Chrysler Viper Europe rear fog light.

CSX and Lou, about all I can tell you tonight is that the ashtrays in a 96 R/T 10, a 99 ACR, and a 01 GTS all look the same to me...AND they are completely interchangeable between these three Vipers. I did not see any numbers on any of these three ashtrays. I hope this helps.

    4) The Viper production line was shut down during the summer of '93 due to a shortage of hoods that would pass muster for quality. There were indeed a number of Gen1s that developed paint cracks due to all the filler used on them.

    7) Mystery switch... As noted, doesn't do anything for the US market. (I use mine to open my garage door). I suspect it turned on some rear lighting for the Canadian cars??
