Went out for errands yesterday in our 17. Came back out of store update must have started for it was at 70% complete, attempt 1 of 2 it said ("do not drive, remain parked..") . I didn't have time to wait, so I started it and continued on, about 5 mins later it completed and prompted "update successful" or something like that.

what does the "attempt 1 of 2" mean? It'll only attempt the update 2 times? or else, what?

Ar, remember the ethos of the Viper? No ABS, No Traction Control, No Nanny aids, a True Drivers Car. No Door Handles Windows or Computer Gizmos......

    .................What the Hell Happened

I had the same message because I was able to ignore the update the first time it appeared. You probably did the same.

Dealership tried to update my head unit and the update failed, which bricked the entire system. They say the entire system is black and won't boot up at all. They're waiting to hear from "STARS" on the green light to replace it due to software malfunction. Anybody have this problem?

As I think I mentioned earlier in the thread, this is happening all over the FCA line. When my Ram bricked, they worked on it for 2 days. Finally unbricked it, and didn't charge me a penny. That being said, over on the Ram truck forums, some have had this happen, and the dealer said too bad...replace on your dime.

They SHOULD replace it no charge, since it's THEIR update which bricked it. If they try to charge you, I would raise a stink, and push it up the line.

Mine bricked a year or two ago with an update and they replaced the whole unit no questions asked. I was hesitant this time, but there was no option to not install or delay...just pick a time. Period.

Was yours bricked when your dealer was updating for you or were you updating it yourself? Also, was yours still under warranty (mine's a 2014)? I kept getting the OTA update every few drives but it seems nothing ever took.

Dealer called me back and said "STARS" advised to replace the unit at customer cost. My service advisor believes I shouldn't have to pay for anything since it was the update that messed up the system as he said himself the unit was working when I brought it in. He's gathering the info for me now to open a case with them to fight them, but he said that he has no ability to dispute as I need to do that on my own... Anybody have experience with this? Would greatly appreciate any advice here.

Dealer has the ability to eat the cost. I would ratchet it up the chain at the dealership, especially if you have a good relationship with them. As I mentioned above, this is the same line of crap that some of my Ram brethren went through. It's FCA update that foookked it up, FCA needs to fix on their dime.

Mine was still under full factory warranty. I did the update myself.
There us a thread around where a guy from South Florida had his brick and the dealer wouldnt do anything. He took the unit out and shipped to the mfg, which was in Orlando area if not mistaken, and it was pretty cheap for them to repair the issue.

When I took mine in for warranty service, I complained that it wasn't functioning right. It took the tech some time to get it updated from the timesheet that they gave me, and the parts list. Two different memory sticks, and a few hours of fiddling around with it. When it first started acting up, I was really worried that it was going to try and OTA update and brick on me. Fortunately, it got into the dealership before that happened. I think they said I was about ten updates "out of date" when they fixed it. I guess it's a good thing that there's crap cell service in Silicon Valley - it tried to update on me a bunch of times and I was always able to opt out of it. I did eventually lose the SRT Performance Pages, but they fixed that when they updated the rest of the thing. Hopefully they sort this out - nobody wants to deal with an expensive piece of electronics that goes crazy on them. I think the Body Control Module is baked into the infotainment system, so if it bricks, it's going to affect a lot more than just the radio and the gauges.

Which dealership did you go to?

I always use Normandin in San Jose, CA. They're good and they have a good Viper tech. It's not like the old days where there were two or three Viper techs on staff, but they're the best in this area as far as I can see.

With very little fight and the help of SRT hotline, Dodge has agreed to cover the replacement of my radio unit! Unfortunately parts ETA is unknown at this time.
