    High Idle

    Hello,
Long time lurker, owner of pre-loved 2014 Viper.

I've noticed that my car idles high (~1200 rpm) until oil temp goes above 180 deg (which can take awhile). Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas on why/how to correct?

    Thx,
    Brute

Yup that is me, talked to the tech. Last flash update from Dodge had a higher idle set to 1000 rpm. Why,,, no one knows.

I remember reading the old article referenced above - but it never specified, is the idle high on start-up only, or after engine reaches temp? In your case OP, ~180* is considered operating temp for the viper, every engine I've had would idle high until operating temps are reached, then settle to their typical rpm. Bikes, cars; inlines or v style; they've all done it.

It doesn't matter since its calling for 1000 rpm which the tech showed it was requesting. It makes no sense but I'm starting to see a lot of things that don't make sense when it comes to the viper world.

yeah in your case I'm not sure why the new flash standard is 1000 rpm. Hopefully someone who has had interaction with Dick Winkles or another highly involved member can shed some insight on that. Maybe it's due to the universal standards like the oil weight; being meant to be a 1 size fits most for climate exposure?

Yes, mine will idle down to ~750 after the oil temp goes above 180. Ive never had a car have to get that warm before idling down. It takes awhile (even here in Vegas), and the idle will go back up if the temp drops below 180. Doesn't seem like the other Gen Vs ive seen do this. My Gen 2 did'nt??

0-40w oil may have something to do with it.. at idle oil pressure could be low (especially with the oil at a thin viscosity). Might just be easier on the bearings to up the idle a bit till.it warms up.

Agree it would be interesting to learn why the change to the newest flash. One thing is for sure, if I do underdrive pulleys I should be good to go at idle lol

An underdrive pulley won't make the engine idle at a lower RPM although it will turn accessories at a slower speed. I suppose you knew that but I thought I should clarify for those that don't.
