    New to me 2014 GTS

Hi guys, Just wanted to say hi. Been searching the forums as much as possible learning as much as I can so I don't ask any stupid questions LOL. Looking forward in lightly modding our GTS, nothing crazy just tuning and possibly exhaust as well as working on removing heat issues especially being in FL (its hot as hell here).

From what I know about this GTS is she has 8500 miles, has already had the r28 service done which assuming it passed, also recently a crank sensor recall (no clue but it was done prior the dealership offering it for sale).

I do have concerns about oil issues after reading that one long recall r28/r29 forum but hopefully there will be no issues.

Thanks for the cool site and good people to enjoy our Vipers with.

    Regards,
    Brad

    Congrats on your new Viper!!

I would suggest that you switch to the Gen V section as there is usually more "action" there.

congrats, just watch the oil level keep it topped off. Oil issues were because owners didnt monitor oil levels during break in, the engine burns oil

Congrats on your purchase! What color and stripe do you have?

And be gentle with your right foot as the rear end can get away from you pretty easily...too many examples of that on the back of flatbeds on YouTube!

    Enjoy!

Congrats!!! Where are the pics? About your engine, beside what others said about always checking your oil level, you can send off a small sample of your oil for analysis to blackstone labs for $28 if you are curious. Hope to see you at the next FL Viper meet!

Thanks guys, didn't have subscription so I didn't know anyone responded. The welcome is very nice. This isn't my first fast toy, so I'm already wanting more. Itching to see what MPH she runs on the Dragy which I've been testing against my other whips. She already feels like a high 120's mph which I'd be happy with. Glad to see other FL boys. I'm out of North Port, would love to meet up with other Viper owners. If there are any cruises jet let me know I'm willing to travel.

Though I've heard a lot of this and that about motor issues I'm hopefully its not the norm for everyone. I've honestly had good results with Dodge cars and trucks. Had a Hell Cat and a 392 Charger which both a blast. Regarding the r28, I called Vince Dodge and they stated that the R28 was done in 2017 (forget what month), we both assumed since R29 wasn't done it didn't come back with any oil issues. Also wondering if they changed the air filter and valve cover? Unfortunately no other Dodge services were done which makes be belive the past owner did it himself which I'm going to do as well. The dealer I purchased from did an oil change with castrol spec order and filter (which I got the exact oil but didn't). To me the oil looks dirty so I'm wondering if they really did do it. Oil is a hair over the top line cold (next day) assuming that is correct.

So want to change the shiftier knob and or shorter throw asap, don't like the stock huge ball LOL.

Thanks again guys for the warm welcome. She's White with Black stripes, very impressed with the paint quality and stripes. Im normally not a stripe car guy but damn they did a nice job, these are no ford slap on vinyl stripes.

I am not quite sure what you are saying there about R29 which is the recall involving replacing the driver's side valve cover (and the coil cover on top of it.) However, I can see in your photo above the new configuration air line routing over top of the driver's side intake tube coming from the new location on the replacement valve cover, which indicates that R29 was completed.

Thank you for this information, honestly I do not know was just sharing what was told to me by calling the service department when I asked them to look up any recalls that are on history. They only stated r28 was done, I thought R29 was more involved like replacement of motor etc..

All R28 cars also got the R29.

But not all R29 cars were R28....!

Beautiful car, by the way. Congrats, and enjoy the drive!

R28 was for factory personnel to inspect a sample of oil for abrasive debris. It found, the engine was replaced. If the engine was not replaced, the car should have had the power train warranty changed from 5 years to 10 years or 100,000mi whichever occurs first. I am not sure if that extension was also done for R28 cars that had the engine replaced.
R29 was a design and parts change to correct a problem FCA described as "Under rare conditions during high-speed right-hand cornering when the engine is at light throttle and high RPM, engine oil can be forced into the Make Up Air hose, resulting in
    unintended oil consumption."

So your saying I now have a 10 year warranty on the power train since I had the R28 done? Not sure even if Dodge transfers warranty to next owners etc.

Yes, you definitely should have. Check with a CJDR dealer. However, some people have reported issues with not having their car show up in the Dealer Connect system. You would want to get that resolved. In my search for a used Gen V, that warranty is a prime incentive for me when considering a 2013 or 2014. https://driveviper.com/forums/thread...e-R28-Vehicles

Thanks for this info, going to find out. Kind of a double edge sword. If she does have the extended warranty I might not do modifications. If she doesn't game on.

  17. #17
Congrats & welcome! If recalls were performed, you should have the extended warranty only if FCA has not voided it due to lack of maintenance, aftermarket mods, or negligence. There is a split opinion here that 15, 16, and 17 models are just as susceptible to engine failure as the 13 and 14 models but FCA never took responsibility for it. Nevertheless, call your local dealer and they can tell you exactly when your warranty expires. Just make sure you do the recommended oil change intervals of 6-months or 3,000 miles whichever comes first and keep it documented in case you ever need to use that warranty.

Thanks again, good suggestions on services done which I'm trying to obtain. Currently, she has 8500 miles, the owner had R28/R29 done in 2017. Seems the previous owner did his own which sucks since it's not in the Dodge system. Trying to contact the original owner if that's even possible.

If you called your dealer and your warranty is still intact, I wouldn't even bother checking with the previous owner about maintenance records (although it'd be nice to have). Just keep up with your current ownership records as I would assume FCA can't possibly expect you to be responsible for previous owner records. IE if you purchased used from a dealer they usually don't provide any of that documentation.

if you do, I would recommend staying away from things like the Arrow PCM as FCA is trying to use any trick in the book to deny a warranty claim. Keep an eye on your oil consumption, check levels only when car is warm within 5 min of shutdown. I personally get an oil analysis every year for each oil change to have documentation that wear levels are fine. Last one had great results.

Good recommendations, Normally I'm all over tuning but this system doesn't seem as easy either. Not just slap on a tune and be done with it. I've only checked oil levels at cold conditions, surprised one would need to do when warmed up. Will experiment and see different readings. Whom did you send oil to to check?

    blackstone labs

viper has some oil capacity in its oil cooling system, so they want you to account for that hence checking after shutdown and not cold. If its at the top cold, it will be low once warmed up. So when its at the top warm, it will be over the top cold, but thats what you want.

I've only check when cold and its was barely over the line. Whats the difference of warm vs cold height on the dip stick? Personally the consistence of a cold long none start up oil height should be something to gauge or reference.
