    Squeak and rattle question

Good afternoon, I have a question for all that can help... I have a good friend in the market to purchase a Gen 1 or 2 viper, open to RT10 or GTS, he went and looked at a 2000 RT10 with 16k miles and called me after and said the car was very squeaky and rattly, I should add the the hard top was on the car... So I go back to when I purchased my car, I got a ride in 3 vipers, 2 Gen 1 cars that were very tight and a Gen 2 car that felt very loose and rattly and the hard top was on the car, when I mentioned this to the owner he said it was all in the top but I purchased a Gen 1... when my friend asked the owner about the rattles in the 2000 he looked at the owner simply said "it's a Dodge". Are these cars notorious for having lots of squeaks and rattles with the hard top on?

No more or less than any other 20 year old car.

In an RT/10, yes. They were not built to be quiet GT cars. They will squeak, rattle, make a lot of wind noise and be a blast to drive while making all the noises.
One thing that can help with the RT/10 hard top to get rid of a little noise is give the rubber gaskets that touch the body a light coat of vaseline. It will both help the gaskets last longer and also get rid of some of the squeaking, not all but enough to make a noticeable difference.

Thanks for the intelligent answers, I and he both realize these are not new luxury cars, both have had our share of muscle cars both original and resto mod, I have a 95 that I would consider extremely tight but no top, and have been in others without the top and would not consider them to be squeaky or rattly... only with a hard top on the car and just really wanted to know if Gen 2s with the hard top have an excessive amount of squeaks and rattles from the top, will continue on with the search keeping this in mind... and maybe find one with a louder stereo... brilliant

You know Dave it's funny... I was warned about you before joining this site by a friend with a few vipers, said it's guys just like Dave6666 who trash the site and keep people away... I always look at your condescending remarks to most ads... with your "LMFAO"... like a 12 year old girl, like most forums there is only about a dozen members controling 90% of the posts and always one person with an overly high opinion of themselves who thinks they are the grand puba of the site and insults everyone... usually driven by insecurities... I've watched others on here call you a douche bag and my guess is your a natural douche bag in life... more than likely that will be the biggest thing you leave behind when your finally gone, for a site that works so hard to get new mebers to join and keep existing members to stay you don't help, I'm certainly moving on like others I know

I would love to buy Dave for what I think he's worth and sell him for what he thinks he's worth!

Both of my tops are rattling, it's mostly coming from the rear latches which don't seem to hold the top real tight. The other main source of rattle / squeak is the dash. This is not so pronounced at colder ambient temperatures but in summer when it gets warm it is much more present as parts are moving/twisting more. It's ok when you have nice smooth roads but if not then it's sometimes annoying. One day I was thinking to remove the dash and see what can be done about it by e.g. adding kind of fabric, foam or other noise insulation material between the plastic components to reduce noises. On the other hand, I guess it belongs to the overall Viper experience and it is probably not worth the efforts....

If the noise is in fact coming from the hard-top (and most likely it is), I put a few small pieces of foam around the front pins to help.

I have a 2002 RT/10 with a hard top. The rear latches caused a lot of squeaking. One latch had no rubber gasket. DRM1125R suggested vasoline. Might work for your friend, too. Check the rear latches and you'll probably see what's causing most of the squeeking. Plastic dash and console can also squeek and rattle.

Remove the cats. Fit a Corsa or belanger exhaust system and you will never hear a rattle again!

    What'd he say?
