    P0442 98 gts

Been having this code pop up the last 6 months. Replaced the gas cap hoping it would fix the issue but it just came on again. Anything else I should check before taking the nose off the car?

I also had some challenges filling up the tank today. Even at very low fill rate it will shut off repeatedly. I have to barely pull the trigger with the nozzle barely in the filler neck to get it to work.

Sounds like something is up with your fuel system vent. I just had the p0442 too and the gas cap o-ring just needed some lube. My GTS took gas like a champ though....full bore until it clicked full.

I cut open a Gen 2 fuel tank once for grins. The amount of check valve / backpressure valve / rollover valve science that went it to the internals of every connection at the tank is stunning.

Does it throw the code only when your tank is low on fuel? Mine did...when the tank is low there is more air to compress for the emissions pump, either small leaks in the line or a misreading pressure sensor is causing it. There is a timer that looks at how long it takes to pressurize the system and it takes longer when the tank is low.

Good call. I filled the tank and haven't seen the code in 40 miles. I took the car to see if it would inspect and they said it wasn't ready yet and to keep driving it though. Fingers crossed as I'd like to get my registration done soon so I don't have to look over my shoulder all the time.

I would look at the fittings behind the front fascia. Seen it on cars where the rubber elbows and connectors fail. The code will eventually keep coming back otherwise.

So when you say testing station said it was not ready, which IMs were not set?

My 96 RT/10 runs like a champ but in the last 4 years, it simply will not set the CAT IM. Everything else sets but the CAT IM. I have done the Chrysler drive cycles for a Viper and it still just will not set. Testing every two years from 2013 to 2019 (2 weeks ago), I have seen an increase in NOX. All other numbers have stayed the same but NOX has increased each test. 0.25 in 2013, 0.55 in 2015, 1 in 2017 and 1.75 in 2019. Limit is 2.00 . I am going to replace old factory cats with NOS factory cats if I can find them to save the hassle since Colorado recently adopted California emissions standards 100% match (oh yippee!!!). I did have a code P0441 - Evaporative Emission System Incorrect Purge Flow that would set on the highway at 55 mph cruising in a drive cycle with the plug in while driving. I reset it three times and on the third time, it went away for good but suspect I still have a problem somewhere. Car is stock other than CARB compliant mods of Edelbrock headers, Borla cat-back, K&N Filtercharger II. I also had a weird sucking sound from front of motor/radiator area upfront at times like a vacuum leak or something which was concerning but could never find it and sound went away as well and has not come back. Hard to tell what the issue was as I don't drive it much and guy before me, before 2013, drive it a whopping 82 miles in 5 years of ownership.

Either way, if you figure it out let me know. Anyone with an opinion on my issue, let me know. I was just thinking of replacing all of the emissions tubing, purge valve, canisters, solenoid, gas cap, etc. as but the time I track it down, the time and money spent on troubleshooting, I could have just did what I just mentioned. Not sure what else to do. joys of a 23 year old car and a lot of heat under the hood.

I'm not sure what all wasn't showing as ready the first time but I took the car in on Friday to another location after driving it 40 more miles and it passed. It does shows the Catalyst as still not being ready though so I guess they allow 1 to not be ready and still pass. When things cool down a bit I'll pull the nose off the car to check the connections there to make sure all is good now. Just happy to have a new registration sticker on the car now so I don't have to worry about it anymore.
