Door and rear speaker suggestions Are the rears subs

I’m looking for speaker advice for a gen 1 viper. Mine came with old, crappy speakers so I don’t know what it started with.
I know the door speakers are 5.25” but I will likely try 6.5” speakers with a little trimming. Are the rear speakers (the ones between the two seats) subwoofers? Can they be?

Does anyone have specific suggestions on door speakers for under $300 a pair? Is there a notable difference between $130 6.5” door speakers and $250 door speakers? The car is already wired with new wires and an amp, so I just need to replace the speakers and amp.

I tend to use $100+ speakers, but not usually $300 speakers. Except for the subs. I will drop a little more coin on them.

You can make the 2 center speakers subs by the speaker selection i.e. buy subs, and then by your crossover settings on the amp.

I doubt that you will get some real bass from the speakers between the seats, even if you replace them with better ones or specific subwoofer drivers. There is just not the enclosed volume it requires for a somewhat decent reproduction of the low frequencies.

My recommendation would be to build a footwell sub, the only way how to get some real bass in an open roadster like the RT/10. This is what I did.

    Maybe this is helpful:

You can do reasonably well with smaller subs. I have a single 8" in my GTS and a dual 10" enclosure in my H1. Both setups quite small in the realm of subwoofer size, but both systems still very impressive.

Dave, can you share some more information about your sub in the GTS? What driver did you pick and what's the enclosure design? Thx.

It's a JL Audio. Alpine 5-channel amp with the 4 channels bridged to 2 to drive the door speakers. The factory rears were blanked off.

I ended up completely rewiring the car. It's a big project. All new speaker and power wires. I did not want to block the rear cabin exhausters nor the passenger footwell with a sub box there. I did not want to build a box that needed contouring and fiberglassing and blah blah blah. So I built a flat plate from 1/2" MDF that sets in the rear trunk area. No mounting holes required. Just sets there. But does not move around either. I don't use my trunk so the loss of that space is irrelevant to me.

I also wasn't trying to win any concourse car shows so did not care that some of the wiring is visible. I used to wire aircraft in the Marines so my wiring looks good.

The plate with the amp and sub will pivot up if you use the space below it. All without undoing any wiring. If I disconnect the wiring the plate can be lifted out with the sub and amp still attached.

The entire system sounds amazing and will drown out my terribly loud side exit exhaust.

I don't carry a spare but the small duffel bag has an SRT inflator in it.

As mentioned I used the same equipment in my H1 after being impressed with the Viper install. I'm using a dual 10" non-ported and that fills up that giant interior adequately. So you don't have to get carried away with subwoofer size to get good sound.

Dave - Looks like you and I had about the same idea. I made my box below the panel so the top is flush as I do use my hatch fairly often. Hows your radio reception? Mine absolutly sucks and I can't figure out why. Have 5 vehicles and the Viper is the only one I can't get even the local stations to come in clear.

I don't ever use the radio. Matter of fact due to clearances at the back of the head unit to the firewall I couldn't even connect the antenna wire to the head. So in the event of a nuclear holocaust or zombie apocalypse and I'm caught out in the Viper with no way to tune in to the local news to find safe zones, I'm screwed.

Now we are talking subwoofers in a Viper

Thanks for posting your installs, looking amazing!

As for the radio reception: if you did install an aftermarket radio there is a chance of not having power connected to the antenna amplifier. The OEM radio provides power to it but most aftermarket radios don't have that output. You may want to check this.

Where's your foil hat at ?

Yeah, I did miss that part at first and later did hook it back up with a switchable power source. Really wish I could get some decent reception as I stuck in 1990 and don't have music on my phone nor unlimited data to stream from it.

It took a lot of work to get the head unit to fit. I removed the factory rear mount which was not easy to get out, and then had to use right angle connectors because the cables would hit the firewall. The antenna port is behind those right angle connectors. No way to stick anything in there.

Hmmm... I wonder if their is a slight difference between the early and late model GTS cars there as I actually didn't have much trouble at all getting everything to fit in.

My setup is about the same as I'm not using the speaker lines out of the head and am using the outputs to the AMP to drive the speakers and sub. Only difference is I have 3 sets of RCA's back there vs just the 2 you have.

As far as the reception. I've even tried installing a separate antenna to the rear hatch glass (the stick on internal ones) which helped a little bit but still 90 static...

Did you take any pics of what yours looks like? I'm about to undertake this endeavor on my 02 RT10 and was wondering what I'm in for as far as space behind the head unit. I'm looking at just a 4 channel amp and bridging the back 2 channels for an 8" sub (custom box) between the seats.

I think the brand and model of head unit makes a big difference in how everything crams in the dash. I went from an aftermarket Alpine to another aftermarket Alpine - just more modern features - and the layout of the back panel was way different between the models. It made a huge difference in the difficulty of the wiring with the older one having been easy to install. And the newer one a 9/10 PITA.

That's not what I wanted to hear, Dave. lol. I was wanting to use an Alpine head unit because that's what it came with stock, but I'll definitely reconsider if it's that much of a PITA.

Sorry, but I didn't. I used this radio if that helps.

Thanks anyways, man! I think I'm going to go with the Alpine CDE-175BT for my head unit and see about shoe horning an 8" sub in the center with some fiberglass.

Looks identical to the back of the one I installed that was a huge pain to get fit in. Good luck.

Please post some pictures of your sub build as it is coming along. Always very interested in these kinds of projects

Have you selected the chassis already and what enclosure volume are you shooting for?
