    Faceplated T56

I sent my 1-4 gears off to Liberty gears and got them back today. Only took about a month to get the parts modified and now I am going reassemble the transmission. No more syncro garbage. I cant wait to get this thing back together and take it down the track. I now have the new Fuelab pump and faceplated transmission so looking for some single digits out of this thing.

I will try and put together a video of the reassembly if any one is interested.

Yes I would be interested in a video! Mainly the entertainment value.

Would also be interested in a reassembly video. Curious to read your impression of the faceplated gears. I was tempted to go this route (faceplated t56) in my old S2000.

From what I have gathered, faceplated transmissions are not "daily drivers" but we shall see. I dont daily drive the car but I do drive it often.

I have not heard of the term Face plated?
Is this the same as a Dog tooth gearbox?

I take it you still use the clutch when changing gear unlike a quafe box.?

it basically removes the blockers and teeth from the gears. Liberty welds the 7 tooth engagement on the gears and provide thier own sliders, this opens up the engagement "window". You still use the clutch for gear changes. Upshifting is fast but downshifting requires you to rev match because everything is free wheeling and there are no blockers to stop the the gears from rotating, if that makes sense.

I am sure there are better ways to explain it.

Deletes the synchros as well, so shifting is a bit different.

Sure looks like dog box gears to me. I’m sure it’s a blast on the track but a nightmare to drive on the street.

Faceplating modifies the stock gears, whereas dog gears are typically manufactured that way. The engagement is the same though (fewer engagement teeth so it's easier to shift more precisely/at higher RPMS)

Not so once you get used to it. The key is to be firm with the shifts, not lazy and limp-wristed.

I have some experience with pro-shifted Chrysler A833 4 speeds. Shifting is incredible quick and easy, like slicing warm butter. The reason you need to use the clutch is that you can't get it out of the current gear.

I would recommend changing the gear oil often.

What was the approx $ cost?

  15. #15
I tore the transmission down myself and sent the gears to them. I did 1-4 and the cost is $850. I had to spend a little more because a couple teeth on the countershaft were broke so I needed a new one. It was about a month turn around.

Another thing when going "crash box", shifting smoothness/effort is not part of the equation anymore when selecting a gear oil. No manual trans specific lubricant needed.

ummm, UNBELIEVABLE!, I should have done this a long time ago. It literally shifts so fast that I didn't even think I was in the next gear. When cruising it does make a "thud" when you engage every gear but it is unbelievable smooth, almost zero resistance. It blows the tires off with every shift. ITS BONKERS.

The second great fix action was my new fuel pump setup, it held 11.0 AFR through the full pull, gonna have to actually pull some fuel out now. When driving you don't here it, but my car is custom header, no cats, corsa backhalf so it is loud anyway.

I have to say these have been the best mods I have made to the car yet, it is night and day. I am in love with driving it again.

That's for reporting back with your initial impressions! Would you be able to post a video of normal driving conditions?

It is bonkers. Getting rid of the synchro’s eliminates that hesitation. It also gives you monster confidance when shifting. Like slicing through butter.

It is interesting that, in a performance application, synchro’s do the opposite of what they are designed to do. They make shifting more difficult.

Did you get a Liberty's Gears T-shirt or hat? I noticed mine are now categorized as "retro".

lol, No I didnt get a hat or t-shirt. I drove it around yesterday for about an hour but ended up having fuel pump issues. I think its a vapor lock issue. I ordered some heat shielding and I am going to wrap all the fuel lines and make a couple more little changes to see if it fixes the problem.

Besides the fuel pump issue the transmission is just epic. I already have 3.55 gears, upgraded diff and DSS axles so the rearend should live for a while. Hopefully I get the fuel stuff sorted and I can hit the track to see what kind of improvements I can make. Looking to hit the single digits on the "low" boost pulley combo.

How's shifting on the street? Hows it in traffic?

  24. #24
Basically shifting takes no effort, no resistance, shifts are instant. At low rpms down shifting is the same, if you are downshifting 4k or above you just have to blip the throttle and it will fall right into place. If you just putting around its just like any other transmission, just with a thud everytime you change gear.
