    FNG looking for insight

    Hello everyone,

My name is Blake and for the first time, I am looking to own one of my life-long dream cars!

This is my first post and I'm looking to draw on all of your experience and insight!

Does anyone know the history of this Viper?
When it comes to a 2x buyback Viper, what questions should I ask?

    Thank you,
    Blake

When you say "the recall" I assume you mean the R28 - R29 recalls. Those involved 2014 cars. 2015 cars were not involved in that recall.
The questions I'd ask is why was the car a buy back. The dealer will give you a BS reason, you need to do your own research. The next thing is with a branded title a buy back and a salvage share the same devaluation. 79k would be about right starting price for a no stories 2015 SRT. That car shouldn't bring more than a low 70's number with a branded title.

I'm not sure if the history report means that there were two actual buybacks, or if it is just reporting that there were two different titles issued and each had a buyback branding.
I have a copy of the ad for this car for sale in August 2018 at the previous dealership with their asking price if you are interested in seeing that. PM sent.

I have never seen a car get bought back twice.

In order to purchase the vehicle, FCA will require the dealership to have you sign off on a form stating the issues that had been reported and any fix that was done to correct them. I would ask the dealership to email those to you so you can look them over beforehand. I would also ask the dealer to send you the equivalent of a Ford OASIS, which would show all work done under warranty, which may show you why it was purchased back the first time.

I wouldn't touch this car, personally.

Why was it bought back twice? It now has a branded title which will hurt resale. I would maybe check with a dealer on the VIN and look up service history. While that price seems good for a non-branded car I don't think it is great for one with a branded title. By the way, many folks prefer TA Orange over Yo Orange. Not just saying that because I own a TA Orange car. There was a thread on here somewhere when Yo Orange came out where a lot of people didn't like the color. I've not seen the color in person so I can't comment. It might be awesome but you might want to look at it in person if you decide to buy.

Thanks all. Is there a Dodge/SRT factory group still around i could contact? Also, has anyone owned one of these buyback Vipers? Is so, what was your experience good, bad or my fear, power train replacement.

IMO that car isn’t anywhere near cheap enough to warrant the risk associated with the branded title, and the difficulty in getting rid of it when the time comes.

I would start with your local Dodge dealer.

I have to ask why you would even consider a buyback/branded titled car that is priced like a clean title.

I live in Boise, ID. I'm not sure if dealers here have ever worked on a 5th Gen, then again, nor have I! I work for the Department of Corrections, so yeah... In order to get a dream car before I die, I have to look at a lower price point. Now that being said, I don't want to throw money away like Tom Hanks in The Money Pit!

BlakeA, have you totally ruled out a Gen IV ?

Assuming that you are fixed on a Gen V...just take tour time, fo the research, and buy the best car that perfectly suits your taste.

As stated above, for well less then the asking price advertised, you can get an early Gen V GTS in a variety of colors with a warranty.

Best of luck in the hunt.

My 2015 shows the R29 complete. I’m a newb and didn’t know much about it. Was it just an inspection? Did it result in the 100k mile warranty?

The R29 recall changed the driver's side valve cover and the routing of the venting hose connected to it. The 100k mile warranty was only related to the R28 recall.

I'm from WI and looked a long time before buying. With that said be very careful of Van Horn they seem to get, and resale, a lot of buybacks. Good luck with your search.

For the new guy. R28 applied to many cars of MY 13 and 14. Basically it involved the dealer sending your oil/oil filter into SRT for analysis. If it showed debris the engine was replaced. Any car that had the R28 also received an extended powertrain warranty regardless of the results of the analysis - 10 years/100,000 miles. R29 applied to 13, 14, and 15s and was a reroute of the driver side make up air line that runs from the valve cover to the airbox. Engine cover on driver's side was also replaced to allow the reroute. No extended warranty was given for cars with only R29.

I also looked into this one recently, has anyone discovered any information on this vehicle?

Branded title pros and cons depend on the buyer and extent of issues. If you are going to keep it for a long. long time and entry price is an issue then it could be a good path for you. Any dealer should be able to print out the detailed warranty history for you, so check that out. This car wasn't highly optioned and was therefore rather low in original sticker price, that affects resale too. That color looks really nice in person, definitely different tint than the TA but nice none the less. Based on your personal situation you describe this one sounds worth checking out, just be on alert because of the prior issues. Some of the buyback cars were taken back for incredibly minor issues, who knows this may be one of them. I too would be expecting a purchase price nicely below the ask. Good luck in your search.

    Here is window sticker for the car;

They listed that car for super low 70's one day ($72k?) and went right back to 78k and have been slowly dropping it. I got my YOrange with 12k miles non-buy back and lots of extra aftermarket crap for 78.5k last year. Mind you the market has changed alot but I wouldn't pay mid-upper 70's for a lemon stock viper.

Yorange is a nice color. Personal preference for the owner compared to TA Orange. Have you tried to reach out to Palmer Dodge. They are a reputable dealer that sold many Vipers. They may not be able to share much due to privacy laws but worth a shot. If there was other documentation required to force a buyback it might be part of some public record??? Two buybacks would have me concerned IMO. I would suggest dealing with a reputable seller or one of the preferred dealers that support the VOA and have much skin in the game.
