    Gen 1 Camshaft Sprocket

    Hello,

Long story short, I don’t have spark being generated from my ignition coil however have power being sent to the ignition coil. I’ve OHM tested the Ignition coil, everything checks out. I’m down to either the PCM being bad (even though I verified the ASD relay is working correctly by power testing, verified cam and crankshaft sensors are working or is the differences in my Camshaft Sprockets from what I originally had. I’m hoping I can post some pictures. The timing set I ordered from Cloyes was “supposed to be the OEM replacement C-3084. I noticed the timing steps are different after the fact. I’m stumped at this point, can not figure this out. It almost appears that I had a “custom cam sprocket” but I had to changed those out because I had way too much play in my timing chain. Still have no spark, but power to the coil pack when you turn the key on “tester light comes on for a second then powers off” and then stays constant once you turn the engine over.

P.S I have pictures of the old and new Cam sprockets but can’t seem to figure how to upload them on here.NEW.jpgOLD.jpg

Thank you Dean. I think because I was making the post from my phone it wasn't working. However, I did find out that my PCM is reading codes #42 & #54. I've pulled my cam sensor and put a piece of metal in front of it while testing the ohms and it does appear that it changes and detects metal no problem. I then pulled the cam sensor and put a piece of metal in front of it and did the on-off-on-off-on key trick and still got the #54 code (hoping that the piece of metal in front of the cam sensor would dummy test and eliminate the possible incorrect Cam sprocket) I've also verified the prongs in my connector to the cam sensor, everything checks out. Maybe my cam sensor is faulty?

    42. Fuel pump relay control ckt, AUto Shutdown relay. No ASD relay output voltage at PCM. Fuel level sending unit volts out of range, fuel level unit no change over miles.
    54. No Cam signal at PCM.

The new cam gear you installed is wrong, you need one like the old one.
The cam sensor picks up on the front of the gear.

Great.... yeah I’m coming to find out I have a Gen 1 Block, Crankshaft, timing cover and everything else but they put the Katech Gen 2 electronic system on it. I then noticed the difference between a Gen 1 & 2 cam sensor. Then to follow the timing steps being different, engine has to come back apart and I need to find a Gen 2 Cam sprocket. The whole reason I changed it out in the first place was due the excessive play in the original timing chain. I tried to just replace the chain but realized the wear was in the sprockets. So, question is... where do I find a Gen 2 Cam sprocket? In the meantime I’ll be pulling the engine apart and checking for powertrain damage because I installed the wrong Cam sprocket.

    No Powertrain Damage

I have good news, pulled my drivers side head and didn't inspect any valve to piston damage from running the wrong Cam Sprocket. Thankfully when I had my pistons made from JE, I chose to put valve reliefs and went with a .051 MLS Head gasket from Cometic. I'll pull the timing chain next, I just need to find the correct timing set! At least now I know I have the Kaytech Gen 2 ignition thanks to Steve. Cheers!

Since the timing marks are in the same location on both gears, you will not encounter any piston to valve damage.
I did find a used gear yesterday in our stash, it looked good i can double check it on Wednesday when i am back in the office.

Keep in mind the timing chains on newer engines are not like the old days where the timing chain was super tight. They do have a little movement in them.

It looks like autozone does have new stock correct upper gears

    Scot,

Would the crankshaft sprocket remain the same followed by the timing chain? Is the only difference in the Cam sprocket the timing step? Should I use copper sealant on my crushed Cometic gasket that’s never seen heat?

    Update

Update: Bought the Gen 2 Cam Sprocket for my Gen 1 Block. Fastest way to tell which ignition module you have is by which Camshaft sensor you have. Gen 1 Cam sensor has a pigtail to a connector, Gen 2 is just the sensor, no pigtail. There is a 360 degree timing step on Gen 1 Cam Sprockets, and 180 timing step on Gen 2’s. Car fired up right away! Hope this helps anyone that may run into this issue. In my case, my old timing chain was far beyond continued use and caused major piston to valve damage in my previous engine. Cheers!

P.S I had really bad popping when I let off the throttle , I also think this was due to the amount of slack that was in my timing chain.

Sure glad to see your efforts were successful.

It will be interesting to hear what you think of your lift-off exhaust sound now...noting that fully stock 96 R/T 10's had a noticeably louder, longer deceleration exhaust burble/pops when compared to other Gen I and early Gen II Vipers in my opinion. I love that sound !!

    Happy New Year
