    gas smell in gararge

My Gen. 2 is parked in a closed garage for the winter and I noticed a strong smell of gasoline. I don't see any signs of gas leaking, the cap is tight and no smell inside the car. Have heard that the injector O rings can leak and cause this smell in garage that is tightly sealed. Do you think this is a possibility since the O rings are original?

If you think its injectors, look where they go in. Is this the first time doing this? Is this the only thing in the garage? Any gas can in the garage?

Nothing else in the garage except my 2 cars. In the good weather the windows are open and ventilation is very good, never smelled it in the good weather, but now when the windows are closed it hits you right in the face when you go into the garage.

Its a fuel injected car, the only thing it can be is a leak (ie line hose etc) OR the injectors are dumping tons of fuel (leaking) and the smell is coming from the air box etc.. Air out the garage and then close it up again to see if it comes back.. May want to pull the other car out for a while to see if its coming from that.

Check the Schroeder valve on top of the intake manifold, that shiny brass looking thing. Unscrew the cap and see if fuel is seeping through. Mine went bad a several years ago and I ended up replacing it.

    Is the tank full?

On my 98 I had this exact issue when the seal on the top of the tank cracked. I had filled it up to the top and because the seal was bad it leaked out. Not the worse fix but was doable.

For the newer cars, they are known to leak and crack at the hose inlet. Could be the other issue.

    Hey Marty,

I know where you're going and it's not good!

For those that may not know, I had the same smell of gas and unfortunately, it was a cracked filler neck on the gas tank. Suddenly started noticing a strong gas smell and ultimately had to cut out the gas tank to replace it with another one. Look for dark stains/seepage near the upper hose area. Hope that it's not the case, but...

Nothing in garage but cars, all yard equipment including gas cans in yard shed.

Can you just replace the valve with a pipe plug if it is leaking?

If there are other cars in the garage, how do you know its coming from the Viper?

Whatever you do, don't start the car until you find out the source of the smell. You don't want to start a fire.

Go to page 3 of the "How To's"

Near the bottom you will see " Fuel Tank Replacement"

I had to do this ... on my 2002.

Will send you my phone# if you wish to discuss ...

This has happened to me on my other older vehicles in the past....2001 vehicles....fortunately hasn't happened to my Viper yet. Not looking forward to a tank replacement if that day comes.
