    AMG GTR vs ACR

I finally got my GTR. I had one on order forever, Mercedes was holding them in a warehouse in Long Beach. I found this used one for $41K off MSRP with only 2K miles so I cancelled my order.
I've had it in my thread for awhile and got a lot of PM's about comparing the two, on the street and the track. I'm taking it to the track on Wednesday, but on street tires. In January I should have Forgelines for it and Michelin slicks and then I can see what she can really do.
On the street the GTR is MUCH faster and much more of a handful to drive. If any of you have driven a Benz with the Hot V turbo 4.0 you'll know what I'm talking about Never have I felt a car with so much off idle torque. The sound is incredible, like it shouldn't even be legal. The rear end of the car will step out with 3/4 throttle. The car NEEDS a much bigger wing I'm researching that now.
The car feels MASSIVE, even bigger than the Viper. The motor doesn't even start until over 4 feet back from the front bumper, which gives the car it's 53/47 rear bias.
My feeling is the GTR will annihilate the Viper on the straights, and going into slow turns the 4WS is crazy. You turn a corner and you don't really turn per se, the car rotates, like it's an ice skate. It feels freaky. The ACR will be faster coming out of slow turns because the wing will let me put power down faster. It's not really a fair compaison as the GTR is actually one class down in Nasa because of it's weight, but I think lap times will be very similar. I plan on tuning the GTR as well, and maybe do the turbo impeller upgrades which will put the car close to 800hp. I'm going to track it a few times a year, I don't want this car to get beat up obviously. I'll report back after my track day with my opinions on the two cars on the track.
Pics below. It's interesting to see how much lower the ACR is, the whole roofline/cockpit of the GTR is way bigger/taller. I think overall the Viper is way sexier, and the GTR looks meaner. Look at the wing envy in pick 4 LOL

    Nice OP!
I've been telling my brother to get an AMG GT for his 50th. GTR is on another level.

I think if the ACR had a DCT and at least 700rwhp (basically over 800hp @ engine), it would be the car manufacturers would be gunning for. But 645hp when corvette/camaros and dodge hellcat/challenger is doing over that, Dodge really goofed on making our cars stand out in the world stage.

Yeah I've been doing a lot of studying how DCT's affect lap times. They help in so many ways besides just acceleration.

Sweet car Arizona. A follow Shmee on youtube who has one. Those things can be turned up pretty easily if you so desire.

Absolutely stunning. Congratulations on yet another great car

The front end design on the AMG is one of the best out there. The green is just evil looking.

Very nice and cant wait to hear what you think of it.

    Car looks awesome, congrats.!
No way the MB takes down your 9.0 Xtreme from a roll, or any Heads and Cam viper for that matter. go to 4:56 mark on video and watch it vs a stock Lambo that traps 130. GTR has 577 hp at the motor stock.

World record on a modified one with bigger turbos is 10.2 at 134 mph.

Nice write up! Love the front end, hate the side and rear views. Awesome color though.

I have a buddy with one and the sound is amazing. But then again, the blown AMG's have had the right soundtrack for years now. They do depreciate like pigs though, so nice call on grabbing something with a discount.

    Enjoy!

AMG GT is one of my favorite cars. Drove the GTR at exotics racing during NVE3. Not seeing how its going to be faster in straights than the viper though 640hp/600trq 3350# vs 577hp 516trq 3700#. Turbos always have a faster feeling when boost comes in vs N/A

Funny I found that dude pretty quick when I first start looking at GTR videos, I didn't like him at first, but he's great. Love his enthusiasm.

Yeah it can't touch the 9.0, I just meant the stock ACR. Turbo Benz's are massively underrated in power, but yeah it can't run with a 740whp 2800 lb car lol. The GTR is HEAVY too, 3700 lbs\
The turbo upgrade is $16K including the tune which RennTech rates at 761hp.

It's the DCT and underrated motor. Most magazine tests have the car at 11 flat at close to 130mph traps. I get walked by GT3's on the straights too in my ACR, I have many posts about this. The LAST generation GT3's ran 11 flat at close to 130. Most magazine tests have the Viper mid 11's and mid 120's. Pretty much every car out there with a DCT nowadays walks the Viper in a straight line with MUCH less power. This is pretty good article- https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-cul...nual-on-track/ He did Vbox data and it shows even with the fastest most humanly perfect shift taking only .02 seconds you lose 1.5mph per shift. When you compare mere mortal man shifts of .03-.05 you can lose up to 4mph to a DCT car per shift. Besides acceleration benefits there are many others, like the car not getting unsettled as much upshifting in a turn etc, the DCT lets the car shift mid turn with no issues. Also the instant shifts and no loss of acceleration per shift lets the car have way closer gearing.
I've posted this before, Z06 vs ACR vs GT3 same day, same driver same track the Porsche walks the Viper and Vette up until about 125mph. That's exactly what happens with my ACR and GT3's at the track. Anyone that tracks their Viper's eventually gets a big surprise on the straights by DCT cars

Doesn't the AMG GTR basically share the same chassis as the viper? I believe Mercedes took the design when Daimler owned Chrysler.

Awesome car and you definitely picked the right color. Only question is when is the weight reduction starting? Enjoy it!

No that was a myth created when Mercedes used camo body panels that looked like a Gen 2 Viper while developing the SLS.

They lost a bit of journalistic integrity with this line:

"How on Earth would someone go from a "shed-built" super sports car with a V10 that originally came from a truck and then build its next generation using space age technology? "

Great car! Like others have noted, the front end is just badass. The interior is a masterpiece. And it's one of those cars that punches way above its weight class. Looking at the specs... weight, hp, torque... it shouldn't be able to run what it does. Amazing. Car and Driver had one in your exact colour in their 2017 Lightning Lap. It had the optional carbon ceramic brakes and Z07 package Corvette tires. (TPC Chevrolet Spec Cup 2's, instead of the narrower standard equipment Cup 2's. They're a no-cost factory option) That car was fastest that year, beating the 911 Turbo S by almost 3.5 seconds at VIR!!! The fastest GT3 they'd run at that time was a 2016 RS and it was a tick slower than the Turbo S in their hands. The GT R virtually tied the ACR time from 2016. I know...different driver, different day and plenty of grumbling about Car and Driver staffers not knowing how to drive Vipers. But still, it's up in the rarefied air. (At the time, the only street car that they'd lapped faster than your GT R was the 918 and the difference was 0.3 seconds on a 2 3/4 minute lap.)

You guessed that the ACR would pull harder on corner exits and you might be correct. But, interestingly, they made particular mention on how the GT R flat rocketed out of the corners. According to their data, it got back to full throttle sooner than every other car they tested that year, even the AWD Turbo S.

Looking forward to your feedback after a track day. Congratulations.

That color is called Green Hell Magno, a fellow Viper club member here in Omaha has a Blue one. Menacing when driving down the road.

"Hi guys it's Shmee and today i...." yeah he has a great YouTube presence.

Many people say it's probably the best value and punches well above it's weight class. Both that car and the AMG e63s sedan are at the top of the heap in their respective classes. For all street driving the sedan beats the GTR but the GTR is the winner on the track, for GT and overall exotic purposes. Congrats OP. Online there's videos of slightly modded GTRs and the issue is traction. Hopefully, the wing and tire setup fixes that and handles your tuning plans. Great combo of cars.

The butt love is really gushing around here today. The car is fine, but let's keep it real. It's no SVJ/GT2RS/720S. Everyone who has an AMG GT around here seems to keep it for about 3 weeks before flipping it back out (which might explain the mad depreciation). Curious to hear the track report though from someone who can really drive. But then I would love for Arizona to take out one of the aforementioned track beasts also. That would be awesome.

Lol, you're crazy an AMG GT is 1/3 the price of all the cars you mentioned. No comparison.

Not following logic. Not everything comes to a track time. Hardly anyone buys these cars because of a temporary record. Cars you mentioned are in a different class. Yet this car is regarded super highly amongst people that own most of the cars you mentioned. Salomandrin youtuber and anyone who has it along with higher tier cars say it's the best car out for what you get.

Why would there be "butt love"? Could it be those who commented really just like the damn car?!
