    Gen 2 Volume Question

    Hi

I've previously owned a 06 Roadster and a 15 GTS. My least favorite thing about both cars is the volume and sound of the side exhausts. I have ringing in my ears from years of playing in bands and the side pipes aggravate the ringing. I do love Vipers though so now I'm considering a Gen 2 rear exhaust car. The Gen 2 looks the best in my opinion and if the rear exhaust can help me, it would be a win! I've never driven one and there are none for sale near me to test drive. So, I'm asking if there's a drastic difference from inside the cabin in the low drone and high volume of a Gen 3+ compared to a Gen 2.

    Any info is much appreciated!

    Matt

With stock exhaust, I find the road noise louder than the exhaust at freeway speed. That said, I wear ear plugs on long trips.

Your profile doesn't say where you are located.

Are you literally in Boston? There are many of us Gen 2 owners around you.

I had to wear earplugs all the time. Got old after a while.

A stock exhaust on a Gen II coupe is notorious for a loud cabin drone in the 2000-2500 rpm range...particularly annoy with the windows closed. Many improved this by adding a Corsa catback exhaust. My Wife prefers a Borla catback (loud) on her two Gen II GTS' while I prefer the Corsa on our 97 GTS.

As I see it, most people go for loud !!

I've had a supercharged side exhaust Gen 2 for over a decade now. It's loud, but earplug loud? Meh.

20 Minutes from you. Are you looking to ride in a stock exhaust Gen II?

I’d love to go for a ride in one, how do we set this up?

I have a stock exhaust on my 97 GTS. Drove cross country some years ago. 6600 mile trip! Never a drone or ringing in my ear. That said, if you have tinnitis, you should wear ear plugs like the poster above suggested. As a motorcyclist as well, I use ear plugs on long 500-1000 mile per day rides. Or try out some noise reduction earmuffs if you prefer. Dorky but they are fantastic when I run the mower or blower at home.

I'm running 3" Borla with rear deletes.. Far from stock. AND, I have Tinnitus. Got it from loud music and my early years of being a mechanic.

I’ve owned about 10 bikes over the years and always wore earplugs. Ridden all over the Midwest on Harley’s a few times. My Gen 3 had Corsas with high flow cats. It was ridiculously loud! Lol. I’m just hoping a stock rear exhaust will be easier on my ears.

I'm down on the Cape if you want to go for a ride. My 01 GTS has a rear muffler delete and really doesn't drone much at all. It sounded like a UPS truck in stock form. Sounds better now, but I still wish it was louder.

Dave is closer but you will have to help him wipe the cobwebs off his garage queen.

I've Never noticed any issues with my Gen II, but when I got my Gen V last week me & my son were riding around & I got on it a lil' bit & Man we both just looked at each other! Lol, it was like that feeling you get when your in a plane & your ears are killing you! Lol, definitely made a difference when we rolled the windows down though! It wasn't quite as bad. It's kinda neat though, I have a friend here that has a Music store that's called Matt's Music, took me back when I saw your post cause I didn't think he had a Viper!

mattsmusic, Dave and Paul are solid guys...take one or the other, or both up on their gracious offers. A side by side comparison is quite helpful with Vipers.

A close friend is a serious musician. He has a 2001 GTS with Corsa catback...as well as an over the top custom stereo. He has no issues driving his Viper.

Thanks Steve, coming from you that's a real compliment...

Not sure of your time frame but Sometime soon, I will have my Viper down to Paul's Cape house if you want to do a side by side Exhaust note comparison... Mine might be a hair louder. If you want loud, I am sure Paul will let you put your ear to his Z06's exhaust...

A side by side would be great. When and where?

This is the same way I thought so I tried the muffler delete & I Hated it, to me it sounded like I just had a Hole in my muffler so I ended up putting the magna flow's on it & it sounds just like I wanted, not to Loud but better than just stock. My Gen V is a good bit' louder, but to me the V10's just don't have that same Purrrrr as the V8's, just my opinion!

Full Corsa exhaust with Belanger headers and R888s.
It's not obnoxious loud or anything. No ringing, no drone, road noise - ofcourse. It's not a Rolls Royce!

But I understand you. I've only been in my Viper and even at WOT it's crazy loud, But nothing like a gen V. Wow those are loud right in to your head.

You can't go wrong with Gen 2. And you should get a Corsa exhaust.

Gen II Full decat, no side resonators, stock headers, bellanger cat back rear exit exhaust system, 127db

  24. #24
That's way too loud! LOL. I wouldn't be allowed to run that on any race track in New England, let alone drive it on the street without earplugs.

Matt, the NY/CT region has an auto cross day at Limerock park this Saturday 8/4, come on down and check out the Vipers in action. You'll get to hear various combinations of GenII exhausts in person.
