And I should have been more clear. I was suggesting that in his situation, where he already has lots of miles on the car and presumably considering trading for something else that's new(er) with a warranty, that his higher mileage is not necessarily a reason to sell the car. If it's been well maintained, and relatively problem free as he stated, it might be a good idea to hang on to it and continue to enjoy racking up the miles while saving the higher early year's depreciation and taxes again.
Higher mileage absolutely decreases resale value, and with his preference to keep and desire to mod it in the future I think if finances allow that he'll be miles ahead dollar-wise to keep the car he loves. Whether the cost of the extended warranty is worth it in his case is harder to say.
