    Extend Warranty or sell

So, I bought a 2015 Viper SRT new. I got a 7 year, 70,000 mile warranty. I LOVE this car and drive it every chance I get and have put almost 47,000 miles on it. And it's run like a champ the whole time.

But, as I inch closer to the end of my warranty, I have to decide whether to purchase an extended warranty or sell. I haven't decided yet, but am researching extending the warranty. I'd like to hang on to the car if I can, but I have to consider other priorities in life, like retiring within the next five or six years. Does it make sense for me to own a vehicle that is expensive to maintain or repair? I'm not a wealthy man so, I can't afford to do it out of pocket. I think I could get somewhere around $70,000 for it, considering that it is still under warranty that would convey to the buyer, and they could extend the warranty too. But, I'm kind of wishy washy on it right now.

This is my first Viper, don't have any experience in long term ownership of this kind of vehicle. Would like to consider any advice that seasoned Viper owners may care to provide.

    Thanks.

While I admit to having purchased extended warranties for our Vipers...I also need to report that they never have come into play. Said warranties did provide peace of mind for us...and, our Gen V still has an active extended warranty. We have no regrets.

Sadly, the price of such "peace of mind" has risen dramatically. If you intend to pursue one, shop around amongst the folks recommended here...BEFORE your OEM warranty expires.

I do feel that with the Gen V cars, the need is real.

Keep your Viper and enjoy it which ever course you choose.

Yes, well, my first call of course was to the dealership that sold me the vehicle. I was told that they will have to call FCA to see if they are willing to even offer an extended warranty, I guess that shouldn't surprise me. If they will not, then I'll have to leverage the experience on this forum for good extended warranties, and where to look.

Wow, 47,000 miles in 3 years - and you don't even live in a warm weather climate! I only put 12,000 miles a year on my daily driver Ram. I've put about 6000 miles on my car in the 45 months I've owned it.

Love that it has been reliable for you as well. I think you got a keeper. Buy the warranty, and keep on drivin'!

You can still buy an extended warranty, I use a popular site to purchase it and I know we have a member here who can beat that price by a little.

Quick quote for your miles and year here in NY. Max care (Bumper to bumper)

    ($0 deductible, 8 years)

    75,000 WMX875N $4,940 / $4,105.00
    85,000 WMX885N $5,960 / $5,125.00
    100,000 WMX8100N $6,540 / $5,705.00
    125,000 WMX8125N $7,580 / $6,745.00

    ($100 deductible, 8 years)
    75,000 WM875N $3,750 / $2,915.00
    85,000 WM885N $4,370 / $3,535.00
    100,000 WM8100N $5,120 / $4,285.00
    125,000 WM8125N $5,830 / $4,995.00

There's 7 years as well and $200 deductibles, but you get the idea. I will say also becareful, dealers have huge margins on these things. I just bought a Durango SRT and the dealer matched my online price and still made $400 off me. The list was over $1500 over cost.

Yes, I'm anticipating a high quote from the dealer, if FCA agrees to offer an extended warranty. Naturally, I'll be looking at other warranty plans too.

Sell yours and buy a lower mileage Gen 5, if you can get a decent amount for yours.

The plans I listed are the same warranty FCA will offer you. These are even sold by a dealer that's warranty department is larger then their sales or service department lol.

Depending on OP's reliability, I'd rather keep a 47k mile Gen V that had no issues, then jump into a 8 or 10k mile one with no personal history of previous repairs and what may be in the future.

I think I agree with you cubeman. I do appreciate all of the input so soon, it's spurred some creative thinking on my part that I probably otherwise wouldn't have done. But, I tend to agree, if I had a lemon, I should know by now. I did have some frustrating electronic problems having to do with the center console i.e. stereo, GPS, AC etc, that were fixed but I've never had a mechanical problem so I do think I did well in that regard anyway. At any rate, I do appreciate the help a lot. I'll let you guys know what my dealer tells me after calling FCA. Hopefully get some more advice.

I’m not sure you will get $70,000 for a 47,000 mile SRT.
I will say congrats on driving the hell out of it!

Scott, Keep in mind those various options Cubeman listed are from the "in-service date," not on top of your current factory warranty expiration.

If you already have the 7/70 power train, the 8 year will give you only 1 more year of power train, plus 5 more years of bumper to bumper. You might just want to self insure? If you do go the 8 year route, I'd highly recommend you go the $100 deductible plan. good luck! Mike

Yep, I would strongly recommend based off my own experience that the additional Bumper To Bumper makes these warranties worth it. Wheel Sensors, Electrical components, Speakers, Buttons, or anything that stops working is covered. My 13 SRT Charger paid over $1500 in a year of buying the warranty. I've still got bumper to bumper till 2021.

So jealous you were able to rack miles like that up in it. I find mine hard to actually find time to drive. Great to hear you had no big issues along the way. Just keep this in mind.... I sold a TT Supra for around 20k. I would pay 40k to get that exact car back today. Just think hard about it. If it's the right color and the right car who cares about the miles. Keep truckin!

Forget miles, maintenance is what matters. And you've already incurred the biggest financial hit, being first 3 year's depreciation and any sales taxes, and the cost of extending the warranty will be minimal compared to incurring those costs if replacing the Viper with something else.

Bruce, I've had my preventative maintenance and services done religiously. I'll hang on to this baby if I can. Would like to mod it a bit someday. But, I heard back from the dealership this morning. MOPAR's best warranty extension is Max Care, the highest they offer (according to the dealership).

    5/100 $4,840
    6/100 $5,320
    7/100 $5,480

I already have a 7/70 power train, bumper to bumper warranty. Seems pretty expensive just to add 30k mileage.

Agreed. I think you just need to "escrow" money just in case. I already do that for tires. I estimate replacement cost (every 4 years or so) based on my driving habits, and put that aside out of every paycheck. I'll do the same for other estimated repairs once I'm out of warranty (windows, oil cooler lines...the usual Viper stuff). With your mileage, I'm think you may have had these two common repairs done already? But they could be needed again down the road.

You should be able to get the 8 year no problem, They are also quoting you the 8 year price but offering you 7 years. don't even know the deductible they offered.

    7 100,000 WMT7100N $4,380 / $3,545.00

They are charging you more then MSRP, That's $200 deductible. You might as well get the 8 year 100k with $200 deductible.

    8 100,000 WMT8100N $4,720 / $3,885.00

Well, I didn't buy the plan, but obviously its not a good deal. That's their quote. I'm still thinking about my options.

Call Aaron... he will give you a fair price. I called multiple dealerships around the country
when I extended my warranty and his prices were the best. You can also get no interest up to 18 month
financing on the Mopar warranty if you don’t have the cash or don’t want to put it on a credit card. Cubeman is correct the markup by some dealerships are crazy.
Good luck and don’t sell your Viper!

Something to consider - having an extended (or even normal 3 year factory) warranty now doesn’t guarantee in the least that the covered part that breaks will even be available. Now that production has stopped its likely some of us soon will need to shop for used parts from a crashed car for something that should be warranty.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree. While maintenance and records are a strengthening factor mileage will continue to depreciate the car. I honestly don't think you have a chance of getting $70k for an SRT with 47K miles on it, nevermind if he keeps driving and get up to around 60-70K miles on it. If you don't think that type of mileage is going to severely impact the value of your Viper you are being ignorant.
