Gen II GTS rear glass latch glue

H8 everyone...I was pulling in my garage, and my rear trunk lid (glass) decided to open itself. When I checked it out, it seems the 16 years and the Houston heat have finally beaten the “glue” that holds the latch onto the glass. Does anyone know what the “glue” is, where to get it, or another fix?

Someone posted a well written outline for success a few years back. It may be here or on the VCA site. I will TRY to find the thread.

Mine did the exact same thing almost two years ago. I tried two different epoxy's, both failed. I finally ended up using a GE product called Irongrip, so far its held up.

Some guys on The Viper Facebook page recommended a 3M epoxy...so I am crossing my fingers with it. Just getting the old stuff off is a challenge. I will take pictures along this journey - and post the fails/successes

I had it handy as my hatch hind just gave away not long ago. I used the window weld and it has held good "so far".

One tip, use a heat gun to help remove the old glue. Obviously don't let it sit in one spot to overheat things but a little heat helps release it some.

Make sure all of the old stuff is off, that’s key. Scuff the surface of the actual latch so there’s some tooth on it. Alcohol wipe the glass and latch surface. Apply 3m window primer to both the glass and latch surface. 3m window weld or equivalent in place. The glass primer makes a world of difference. I have been dealing with glass and issues like this in the body shop world for 15 years

Bummer - I didn’t catch the last reply about window primer (and I already put it back together). Oh well, I guess I will be doing this all over all soon. I just hope it holds for this weekend’s car shows

It could last forever, the primer really helps the urethane to glass bond since the surface is, well, glass haha.

Here's the update. The hinge came loose about 3 years ago at the same location that I fixed. I haven't bothered to fix it back.

The latch has stayed put for 6 years. :-) And I do use the trunk frequently.

Well after waiting 24 hours, I was able to shut the rear lid...and it stayed. Cross your fingers that this is a long term fix. I will post pictures and steps to my process either way (as a how to fix or how NOT to fix)

I used window weld without the primer about 2.5 years ago when my latch popped off. I couldn’t find a place locally that had any of the primer. I let it cure for 2 days with clamps on and it has held strong since.

I tried many things over the years to fix this problem.
