So glad to be here to be stirred for your enjoyment and entertainment.
Thought provoking discussion and friendly banter is good for the brain and soul. Give it a try.
Marchionne laid out the next 5 year plan today, and the future is Jeep and Ram primarily, then Alfa and Maserati secondarily. Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat collectively will only get 25% of FCA's future development $$$'s.
It's also been reported for weeks that his successor will come from 4 or 5 unit heads, and none of those people are American.
They lag the industry in hybrids and electric and will make a strong push in that direction to catch up.
So I think the near term possibly of a G6 viper is pretty low. If they do I would bet some sort of Alfa or Maserari shared platform with a new gas/electric powertrain.
Looks like the Maserati GranTurismo is going as well, replaced with the Alfieri. G6 Viper would probably share that platform.
Probably will get shot for this idea, but maybe Chrysler, Dodge, and Fiat just need to be eliminated all together and merged into a new brand identity. Out of the three American companies, Dodge for decades has had the worst rep for reliability, and Fiat is known as being even worse. Merge the best of both companies, Italian design, American powertrain. Hopefully reduce the bad stigma of the companies and increase reliability...somehow.

This is not a terrible idea. Consumers are very wise these days, and they can see the difference in quality between the American makes. Go shut the door, open the hood or look closely at a Jeep GC and compare that to a current model Ford Edge, or a Cadillac XT5 and you'll see what I mean. I considered a Hellcat Charger for a nano-second until I sat inside of one. The American brand FCA products leave a lot to be desired if you have any experience with the other makes. The G5 Viper is a crazy anomaly. Merging the nameplates of the lagging brands might be a nice move.
If they don't do that, then FCA would be insane to spend a ton of money on a G6 at this point. They would need to entirely rebuild the Dodge brand into something that can appeal to a sophisticated buyer. Update the dealer network, push out a new, modern design for the stores (i.e. go look at Porsche, Audi, etc. to see what they require their dealers to build), educate the sales and service force to deliver a top-notch customer experience, and then maybe think about a halo car after that. But to do it now, is insane.
So it won't have a "cute euro-engine". What I'd like to see, if it were even possible...cut off two cylinders from the LaFerrari V12. Bam, new V10 Viper engine. Would be very interested to hear how that would sound.
Long ago I resigned myself in the truth that whichever lane I go to at the grocery store is the slowest lane, whatever I buy loses value, so I each ma chocolate at the grocery line and I buy my cars to enjoy them. As far as I am concerned the ACR-E is a bonkers car and bonkers costs money :-)
On a side note: the Gen VI Viper better be bonkers or it ain't a Viper :-)
Mods PLEASE close the thread
Sergio was very clear today. It's Not In The Plan. any of the rest of our guessing from here is a little silly... It's not going to happen the way C+D said it would. (side note: you're not a journalist if you rush to publish garbage like that without real sources)
"the plan" projects about 5 years out, so through at least 2023, It's Not In The Plan
His challenge to the team is to make it profitable, then they can talk about putting it back in the plan. Profitable is a difficult bar for Viper to clear, for dozens of reasons we have beaten to death on here.
Also, it's very likely that Sergio will retire before the 5 years is up, at which point... who knows?
I don't know...have we ever heard those in high positions fudge, mislead and lie their asses off?
I don't think the Gen V was ever in any 5 year plan, they were bankrupt...and then they just suddenly built it!
If I recall correctly, most of the Gen 5 development costs had already been considered sunk costs and were fairly limited compared to what would be necessary to develop an entirely new model that can comply with all of the new regs, standards and certifications for the next 5-10 yrs.
Check it out...the last Viper! And they didn't s-s-s-studder.
Policy, I don't think we'll see a new viper in the next few years, but I wouldn't bank on Never. Lots' of goodwill in the Viper name.
Sergio would love to sell FCA, next buyer might want to revise it?? 20 years later get ready for the new Ford Bronco.
After the 2010 final Edition, the recession and the Chrysler bankruptcy (and attempted sale of the viper name), lot's of folks thought viper was done.
Them saying final is more of a play on words, like if a dealer says "guaranteed used car," yeah, if its been titled I can guarantee you its a used car.
Nah it sold like ass, wasn't profitable and has a niche clientele that likes to bitch more than it likes to pony up the dough. You can waste your life waiting for the next generation if you want but the company executives couldn't have been more clear in their statements and in their position with respect to this.
There's a 1 in a million chance Gen 6 is coming!!!
So Sergio would like it to come back but it's not currently in the 5 year plan. Doesn't sound like an unequivocal no to me... and plans get revised periodically, right?
Somewhere in a dimly lit corner working after hours there's a small group of Dodge engineers quietly plotting...
