    Shifter

    Is the Gen V shifter like the old Mr. Microphone in Gen IIIs and in need of replacement with a short throw shifter or are they fine as-is? If in need of replacement, is it the same as for Gen IIIs?

    It is a short throw shifter.

    Short throw & user friendly; when I took delivery I hadn't driven a stick in 20 years and picked it right up; the shifts are fast smooth and if you do miss a gear it's not a huge deal; definitely test drive one

    No problems with the new shifter. As those with a Viper history know, the G3 was terrible and the G4 was a huge improvement. The G5 is even better. You won't be missing gears.

    A MGW shift knob is all that is needed now. Even though the T56 was the standard for years with Vipers, Vettes ,and others the T6060 Tremec introduced in the Gen IV was a great improvement.
    Many of us got the full MGW short throw shift kit for even crisper shifts, and the shortening of the shaft helped on the 2010 ACRs. Pretty much the same situation with the Gen 5 , but with improvements
    with the synchros and other refinements, the Gen V is the best system so far - still an MGW shift knob is major cool and I wouldn't have a Snake without one.

    I agree that the G-5 mechanism is the best ever.

    If you choose a (shorter) MGW Knob, Personal pref may lean toward round GRIPPER or sculpted FIRST STRIKE. But consider the 1st Strike is for 'smaller hands' and the 'Gripper' is suited to larger hands.

    I have the Gripper in my G3, I can just swap the original back in and use the Gripper in the G5? Does MGW not have an updated Gripper with the current logo?

    Of the stock shifters the 2010 ACR shifter has the shortest shaft, then Gen V, then Gen 3&4non ACR. So the Gen V falls in the middle. If you want a shorter throw while maintaining a factory look try the 2010 ACR shifter.
