    clicking from rear of vehicle

    VOA #2887
    1997 gts.
    I have a clicking in the rear that seems to happen most often from a stop to a go. 2 shops have failed to diagnose, 1 of them stating that it is likely my wilwood brakes. I'm ruling out brakes because I can decelerate with zero brake usage, come to a stop then accelerate and hear that click again. It is always singular, not click click. do you think that it is a loose hub nut in the rear, half shafts failing, rear diff failing? Thank you for any insight

    That's pretty vague. Does it do it during slow cornering? Maybe diff mounts or bushings, half shafts possible...

    Check the nut at the end of your axles. My 2002 RT did the same thing on the drivers side. I can't recall the proper setting but mine was loose after a retorque to the proper spec the issue went away. Hope this helps

    Viper techs have recommended that the rear stub axle/hub nut be torqued to 250 ft-lbs rather than the lower spec in the manual. 300 ft-lbs has been recommended for race cars, and was recommended by one respected tech also for street cars also. (But 250 is usually the limit of a typical DIY guy's torque wrench) I have read these recommendations as a response to similar sound descriptions.

    You mean their is a torque spec for those? Thought they were just, "get your cheater stick and pull as F'n hard as I can" tight :-)

    Have YOU (not "your people") checked your Viper's lug nuts? I have seen a similar case. When cause discovered and properly tightened, owner blamed work done by the Viper Tech several months prior...THEN, he remembered that he had removed and installed that particular wheel himself just before the sound began. He then spent some time and energy "kissing some asp".

    After checking lug nuts, look at U-joints then wheel bearings.

    Thank you Steve, I'll double check lug nuts but doubtful because the wheels have been on and off probably 4 times in the last 200 miles and not impacted this click noise. (tires replaced, brake work, powder coat wheels, re powder coat etc)

    When my front wheel bearing went it took me ages to find the problem, I had jacked the car up a few times and rotated the wheel and could not replicate the noise, even rotating the the tire on the hub it felt smooth? It was only after removing the wheel and rotor, then slowly turning the wheel bearing by hand that I could feel the worn ball bearings, I had a "click" a few times slowly moving the car in and out of the garage.

    This was not a "clunk" like you get from a UJ.
