    Transmission Syncro adjustment

So while my GTS is in the shop getting the rear diff and AC fixed I asked the shop to look at a few other things that were bugging me.

Car pops out of reverse. If you gently hold it in reverse while backing up it is okay.
The report back is that there is no 'adjustment' available it is a sealed unit. So since I don't want to put in a new transmission they suggested cheaper to live with it.

So then I look up the paperwork from when I bought the car "Hurst short shifter w/ factory handle" so I am back to thinking any chance this somehow is interfering and causing the pop out issue? Because the diff broke the day I got the car I haven't been able to put any shake down miles on it and know all the issues yet...like I don't know if its going to fall out of gear 3 or 5 at 80 mph if I let off the throttle for example.

It is likely the Hurst shifter is just touching the transmission tunnel hole. I had to cut out a bigger slot when I installed my Hurst shifter

See pic IF YOU LOOK AT THE SHIFTER SHAFT you can see a small Knick / sctrach Just above where the flash reflected off the shaft, that was where it was touching the tunnel. Shifter is currently in Neutral position.

Something I can get to underneath you think? Certainly something I will look at as soon as I get it back to the garage and put up on the lift

Access if from the top - inside the car. Remove cigarette lighter/radio/ashtray bezel, remove the shift knob, remove the center console, finally the lower (rubber) shift boot. If you do not want to modify the transmission tunnel hole you can install a different short throw shifter, one which does not interfere with it. I have an IPSCO unit on mine. The IPSCO website has detailed instructions on how to remove the above listed. Here is the link

typically once reverse starts to grind, you will need a new reverse gear, shift fork pads, and to flip your reverse engagement ring around to the the fresh not rounded side. the grinding is the teeth on the gear and engagement ring getting rounded off. once they are too rounded they grind all the time, and if the plastic shift fork pads have broken, or wore outit causes the pop because your shift lever can't move it far enough to fully engage and the detents/shift keys hold it it in place. you can see the teeth on the picture of this gear: There are write up in other forums for t56 were they machine the reverse fork and add a shim to allow the fork to move a bit close to the gear that helps make it more reliable.

99% of the t56's we have rebuild have to have a new reverse gear put in. they just have a very high failure rate

Gear doesn't grind from the little I used car. Just pops out if you don't hold the shifter up when backing.

You need to replace the reverse brass synchro ring and keys, but you don't need new slider. You can flip and reuse it. You need new fork pads too.

You will need to look at this from the top. You may have to drill out rivets to remove the rubber shift gaiter. (I had to)

POP OUT is from not full engagement so either bad fork pads or its hitting the tunnel and not letting it fully in if it was grinding and popping out you would need this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/T56-Reverse...53.m1438.l2649
