Looks Like a South Florida Car

Looks like the local car of one of our favorite members is up for sale. He had been talking about a McLaren (which I advised against only because I hear the disconnected driver experience of the latest techno cars is really bad in the Macs). Could it be true?

A friend of mine has a 570S for a year now, which he custom ordered. This is a guy who's had multiple Fcars, including a 458 and a 430 Scud. He "likes" the car (it is gorgeous) but doesn't "love" it because it is not as involving to drive.

    Whew! Thank God!

It's your twin though, right? Even down to the stitching if I recall?

Let's see how long it last at VE at this price, or if they have to lower it. The fact that yours is a '17 is even better.

I did just talk to a few Mac guys at the Naples Cars on 5th event last weekend, and those that had other cars admitted that it lacked driver involvement. They acknowledged the issue as a legitimate one (in fact, they brought it up), and I think this theme about engaging vs. disconnected driving experiences is starting to become a real discussion point at car events. Since most of these cars are driven on the street (where it requires little skill to operate an auto-clutch car, and thus is less "fun" to drive), it will be interesting to see how MFG's address the point (or whether they have any interest in doing so).

Porsche seemed to go there with the 911R. If they were smart, they would keep working that theme by developing track cars vs. sport driving cars. The sport driving cars would be cars that you enjoy on your favorite mountain road, where you row through the gears and match revs on your own, listen to the sweet sound of the mechanicals of the car working, while enjoying the scenery -- all at say 7/10ths. Bring back manuals, rack and pinion steering, get rid of fly by wire this and that, get rid of the touchscreen center stack and bring back some knobs, etc. With current materials, these cars could be amazing "drivers cars" again. The track cars would continue on their current path and be for 10/10ths closed course driving.

...and you would be doing this where in south Florida ??

I know you have a few twisty on and off ramps that probably get pretty exciting. Dont know how scenic they are though

Fair point, and one of the true downsides to living here. Plenty of scenery, but all at 30mph on straight roads. Nothing like the mountains, or even country roads where you can have some fun and truly "sport drive". Good thing we also have a place in western NC near Deal's Gap, Blueridge Pkwy, Cherohala Skwy, etc.

I was walking around the Naples Saturday looking for the kick-butt Vipers, but not a ONE. You didn't happen to see the only guy wearing a black/white VOA hat did you? How'd you like the big ol white Rolls?

Makes me wonder how important engagement is to owners or buyers who would seldom if ever drive theirs. They're perhaps motivated by other factors that may be more appealing in different and newer offerings.

As any scale goes, driver engagement with a car has a scale that is shifting as time goes by. For example, if you talk to folks who drive 60s, 70's Porsche 911s believe that those were cars that had full engagement, much the same way the first generation Vipers did. Fast forward to today and most of the folks who driver old 911s are old or gone to people heaven and the new generations are driving Teslas and McLarens. A friend of mine was a car enthusiast and had various cars but now has a Tesla and a McLaren and fully believes that the McLaren is engaging since his frame of reference has shifted towards the Tesla.

I for one have driven a bunch of McLarens and there is no question that they are phenomenal cars, but then I get behind my Viper and as the engineer roars to life I tell the car that today is not the day that it will get to kill me. Then I go for my drive where I have to manhandle the beast to succumb to my inputs and when I get back home I am happy as a bunny in a carrot factory! Then I go to work and talk to some of these newly minted millenials and they believe that driving engagement is how many words they said to their Uber driver :-)
