I did just talk to a few Mac guys at the Naples Cars on 5th event last weekend, and those that had other cars admitted that it lacked driver involvement. They acknowledged the issue as a legitimate one (in fact, they brought it up), and I think this theme about engaging vs. disconnected driving experiences is starting to become a real discussion point at car events. Since most of these cars are driven on the street (where it requires little skill to operate an auto-clutch car, and thus is less "fun" to drive), it will be interesting to see how MFG's address the point (or whether they have any interest in doing so).
Porsche seemed to go there with the 911R. If they were smart, they would keep working that theme by developing track cars vs. sport driving cars. The sport driving cars would be cars that you enjoy on your favorite mountain road, where you row through the gears and match revs on your own, listen to the sweet sound of the mechanicals of the car working, while enjoying the scenery -- all at say 7/10ths. Bring back manuals, rack and pinion steering, get rid of fly by wire this and that, get rid of the touchscreen center stack and bring back some knobs, etc. With current materials, these cars could be amazing "drivers cars" again. The track cars would continue on their current path and be for 10/10ths closed course driving.
