Question Corroded Gas Cap 96 GTS

Any recommendations on restoring the gas filler cap on a '96 GTS. Metal polishing vs. re-chrome? It appears the removal and replacement procedure for the cap is simple. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Just be careful that you don't break it when taking it apart.

See this thread if you haven't already:

Dont break the filler latch .... ask me how I know, lol. I should be putting the pics up on the thread if I can get the pics off my Iphone.

Strip off the clear coat and youll have good aluminum underneath. If you have any corrosion youll have to sand then re polish. I sanded mine with 300, 400, 800, 1000 one night while I was watching TV on the couch. Pretty mindless operation but the better you sand the better the polish and final product will be.

If you have it chromed I would suggest you pulling everything apart instead of someone at the chrome shop. Wrap everything in bubble wrap and ship it off. It doesn't take much banging for porosity of the casting to break ... especially the latch.

I would highly suggest you replace the plastic pins when you pull it apart. I went one route and it worked really well for me.
