You likely won't feel a 45 colt out of that thing. Not enough punch behind it given the weight of that gun. 410 May not have much recoil either. I have a couple of cowboy guns in 45 colt but that isn't designed for taking down a black bear here in Arizona. Obviously my 50 cal is way, way overkill for Black bear but I wouldn't feel totally comfortable shooting a charging bear with a 357. Hunting yes, defensive no. So i could carry a 44 mag but those are pretty damn big and heavy too. The german shepherd usually keeps the bears not wanting to tangle with us when we are out there but if I come up on one with cubs I want the most bang I can muster. I am actually considering a Henry guide gun for that purpose. Till then, the 50 cal in a chest holster has been the way to go.
I hear ya. I carry protection for those too. A 450 casul is good if you need protection from Andre the Giant. That's a lt of boom for a person. A 38, 40, 357, 45 acp will do more than enough for a person.
Though I am of the belief "the best gun" is the one you are most comfortable and most accurate with. You can argue calibers all day long, but a .38 is a hell of a lot better than a .45 if you hit your target.

Match grade barrel, laser grips, and adjustable trigger
So that is a 1911 platform, more or less, correct?
Is that a functioning suppressor? I assume so. How useful do you find it? I am in the fence on them because of the price and the fact that the gun is still pretty loud, just much less than normal. Of course unless you shoot it "wet" but you can't maintain that all the time from a tactical standpoint.
I was reading the other day you can recycle old spin on oil filters. They make an adapter (Amazon or eBay, 1/2-28 to 3/4-16) that allows you to take a standard "spin on" oil filter and attach it to the barrel of a gun. Although I've never tried it (because it's illegal to use as a suppressor, unless you register it), But used as intended, it would be a very effective "solvent trap".

I'm generally not the tin foil hat type, but I'm waiting for the day when I read that the people who bought "solvent trap" adapters get a knock on the door. Ordering stuff online leaves an easy to follow paper trail... Apparently they work OK, but not as good as a real suppressor. For the cost difference after the stamp, it could be fun to play with.
Jeff
You could be absolutely correct about that. I would think you would need to be witnessed using that device as a suppressor. If the Government knocks on your door because you purchased a product that could be used illegally, wouldn't they have to do it for purchasing knives, bullets, high cap mags, base ball bats or any other device that could be used illegally? I don't know possibly someone closer to the law could add some clarification.
Browning High Power, 9mm.
Subsonic cycle the action? I would think with subsonics it would be really quiet. As I inderstand it, one of the most effective things a suppressor does is hide the report, making it harder to pinpoint your position. Not sure how much that helps with a handgun, but, better than nothing.
An advantage I could see, is the gun being a lot quieter on you in a high stress situation. If someone came into your house and you fired your pistol in a hallway, moments after waking up to someone entering your house, that piece being a little easier on the ears sounds like a tactical advantage in that sense. Even people who know their firearms well and know what they sound like without ears could be disoriented after firing in an enclosed, darkened area. So that's something to think about I guess.
In 99% of all real high stress shooting, most times if you ask the operator if they heard the sound of their firearm, they will tell you no. I'm sure some Vets here will tell you in a firefight they didn't hear much coming from their own rifle. Most LEOs whom have been in one as well will tell you pretty much the same thing. I was in one in 2010 and couldn't remember hearing a single sound from my handgun. The next time I went to the range, even with ears on I was like..wow, when did this get so loud? The body, as I'm sure Vprbite knows, the body does some amazing things under stress that not until maybe the past 5-10 years have scientist really begun to figure out.

"Silenced" pistols are good for sentry removal. Especially if you are unable to close the last 5-10 ft without detection. Aside from that, the rest is hollywood bs. Fun to play with and show off to your buddies, the "tactical advantage" around your home is essentially nil.

It all comes down to intent. If you never intend to use a solvent trap adapter with live ammunition, then there is nothing illegal about it. Intent is hard to prove though, and if they wanted to press the issue, you'd probably lose. From 18 U.S.C. § 921:
The BATF did crack down on airsoft and paintball suppressors. If the device was removable, and had a hollow cavity, it was deemed that it was a real suppressor and subject to NFA rules. Never mind that it would likely explode if it was ever used in such a manner. Because they could theoretically be attached to an actual firearm, they were illegal.(24) The terms "firearm silencer" and "firearm muffler" mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication - See more at: http://codes.lp.findlaw.com/uscode/1....HekJknOO.dpuf
There is also the case of the original Atkins Accelerator. It was a bumpfire stock for the 10/22 that used a spring to reset the action instead of forward arm pressure like current bumpfire stocks. After OKing it, the BATF retroactively decided that it converted the 10/22 into a machine gun. Everyone who bought one got an letter from the BATF telling them they had to surrender the spring to the BATF(as the spring was the part that made it a "machine gun"). It goes to show that they can, and have, gone after end users once deciding that something was illegal.
I don't know that they'll ever come down on "solvent trap adapters", but I'm still not buying one. Remember, this is the agency that ruled that a 14" piece of string was a machine gun:

This right here. Vprbite it looks like I may be locating back to AZ in a few months. I will let you shoot it when I get there. Yes it cycles fine. only thing I have shot that has trouble cycling suppressed is sub .22. But it was dead quiet. As far as tactical advantage around the home. The Mossberg gets the tip of the hat for that one.....Tavor is a close second though.

Latest HK project is almost done.
[/FONT]Yeah I have seen those powderless 22s not cycle, suppressed or not, but they are fun. My buddy has a pump action 22 and we can have a blast with that.
Thanks for the offer to shoot. I have only shot a suppressed firearm once so I would like to try it again. Really decide if I need to get one before they make them illegal. Welcome back to AZ!
Those oil filter ones look cool to me. I would love to make one with a Viper oil filter. Could you be prosecuted for your solvent trap? Probably. How likely are you to get caught? Second issue. Out in the desert, the chances you would get noticed are slim. I'm not saying it's worth the risk, just that the risk isn't crazy high. Like filing down the seer pin to make your gun full auto. Not worth it. And hell, not only could I not afford the fine, I don't think I could afford the ammo at full auto. Haha. You can really fly through it.

I have a well known HK builder that is a friend. He is putting this together from a flat. I am pretty sure he is the only one doing these (53SD). Basically made to be a "big brother" to the MP5SD which I have. An AAC 5.56SD, M4-2000, or 7.62SD suppressor fits inside the HK SD handguard shroud to give the appearance that it is an integrally suppressed gun like the MP5SD. He makes these in 5.56, 300blk out, and has done a few 7.62x39 guns. All from the HK 93/53/33 platform. It will also cycle subsonic 5.56 in either semi or with a registered pack in auto. That's a two stamp gun btw.
