    Hood Insurance

    Hey all,

My wife and I are in the market for a Gen 2 Viper in the next 3-4 months. The last question I have prior to committing is about the hood. I've been told that the hoods on these cars are the most expensive single part on any american car in history. Something like $15,000.....That's going to suck if i break it or it's damaged not in an accident.

Have you guys heard if anyone like Hagarty will insure the hood separate from the car, or in addition to the car in case I were to take it off and it fell or was damaged while opening?

I don't know if this is enough of an issue to keep us from getting one or not, but I thought i'd inquire.

No, and don't think a company like Hagarty would just insure a hood. Best bet is to buy an extra hood when you can and save it for the day you wreck the car.

Getting close...intercooled manifold and top plate, rear inlet, bypass, and MAP sensor and vacuum fittings done. Extended Blower snout fitted. Just need some "leave me alone" time to fabricate the twin intake tubes (similar to the ROE design) and twin GEN-III throttle bodies.

The GenII hoods may still be available new for ~$3,000+/-. Buy a spare if you're worried about it.

OMG where's the idiots that claim hoods will grow on trees forever LMAO.

Anywho, they are probably all gone. Get one and hoard it if you are worried. There are lots of other NLA parts too if you were to crash. Better learn the car if all this concerns you.

Specialist Viper Salvage yards have hoods, as well as other parts you may need. A good insurance company will be aware of viper costings, that's why you have insurance!

If you think about a viper hood it is not just a hood, it is also the right and left front wing combined The old technique for building the hoods was expensive, laminating different parts together and not all hoods passed inspection, this put the price up. Im sure reproduction hoods could be made much cheaper now, with the new methods out there and different composites.

Buy the car and make sure you insure it properly.

With all this talk of hoods and replacement parts being $$ to get you should really take the extra time to inspect the car and make sure everything is as it should be. Nothing has been touched or rigged by a PO that didnt want to spend the money to fix issues properly. Anything that is found out of place or missing should be noted and taken out of the overall price. Big things to inspect more thoroughly would be the hood both top and the underside as well as the rockers. These are high $ parts that will make you blush if you have to replace due to damage or rot.

Like everyone else has stated chose wisely with your insurance company. All my cars are insured under agreed value with reputable insurance companies. I dont pay much more for insurance then my regular policies on my daily drivers.

I purchased one last year around that price. Inventory shows them in stock but I find that's hit or miss with some Mopar dealers.

    Nope, just hoarding cam sensors.

I'd happily cut into my hood if it meant moAr power. Something different and unique, I like it. I've often toyed with idea of a single turbo hood exhaust dump.
