Dealer says 090 oil filter superseded by 836(?).

Is this correct??

Walmart still carries the 090.

Also, is Mobil 1 still the preferred oil?

Yes, as laid out in one of the club forums by the SRT engineers and quoted many times here. Another fact to note...do not use that part number product if it ends in "AA". You want/NEED the 05037836AB as the "AB" model has an important internal upgrade.

And, YES...Mobil 1 0W-40 European Car Formula (FS) is a fine oil for your Viper.

Ok Guys,

what's now the right one??

Mopar oil filter = p/n 5281090 or 05037836AA ??




I did a lot of filter testing last year on the Auburn Hills dyno after some problems arose. A different filter is spec'd for the'06 Viper.



I did an awful lot of work to resolve the oil system issues for the 2006 engine and this new filter 05037836AA is the outcome. The 090 just does not do the job for the Viper with its high oil flow rate.





Dave it sounds like you work for DC, that's great you can open up to us but before you put Viper owners in a PANIC , PLEASE have all your info correct! It will also cut down on my phone calls!

You said you've done lots of testing on the Viper oil systems a YEAR ago and NOT to use the 090 filter and for everyone to use the 836AA filter. Well this is what I came up with on the 836AA filter, using ALL of a Dealers resources:

Then I called S.T.A.R [Dealer Tech Line], they DID NOT know anything about a new oil filter for Vipers, nor did they not know about ANY problem with the 090 filters for Vipers!

I also just took delivery of another 06 Viper and it has the 090 filter on it!

I am not saying your wrong and I'm sure someone above you is pulling the strings on your research but hey, make sure all the ducks above you are all lined up before putting this info out on a public forum!! :bonker:

Why 0-40 and not the recommended 10-30 for Gen II?

Mobil 1 10W-30 was removed as a factory fill after the 2004 model year. By then, it was felt by several manufacturers to be less than desirable in high heat areas. Every oil analysis that I had completed showed shearing...and, in fact some virgin samples were on the low end of the viscosity spec. Also, there has been more Zinc and Phos. in the 0W-40 than the 10W-30.

I have converted all of our Vipers to Mobil 1 0W-40 except the 2014 which has the Pennzoil 0W-40 which am watching closely.

Formulations of oil change over time...do some current research to see what suits your needs.

WIX 51085 was what the engine warranty center suggested until the 836 number came out. The problem I was told is that the 090 filter would bypass when there was condensation in the oil.

10 years and 50K miles later, even while using the so called inferior Mobil 1 filter that entire time, yes, I'd say you can skip asking the Chrysler engineers if it works.

Thats factory fill for the new Viper's and replaces the Mobil 1 10w30 used on the older cars. Supposedly it has the best additive package on the market for cars with catalyst.

i see there's a penzoil 5w-40 platinum (yellow bottle) and ultra(gray) bottle. which one?
would platinum be even better?
