    Differential and Transmissions Fill Procedures

Can someone provide the the fill procedures for the differential and transmission?

I know its 1.4L/3.4L respectively but I am curious to know if it needs to be pre-measured or its a matter of filling until the fill hole starts to weep?

PS I don't have computer that is compatible with the Viper Manual CD...

Yep, fill until it starts to overflow.

Yes just leave room for slip additive in the diff

Good point. I used a premixed oil so I never had to to think about that.

I just had rear and tranny done at a local Dodge dealer.
Dealer charged me $231.10 for parts and labor.
2 bottles of 75-140 synthetic gear oil with one little bottle of friction modifier.
4 bottles of synthetic ATF+4 tranny fluid.
1 spray bottle brake cleaner to wash it clean.

So paying $231 dollars is not so bad. I was going to do that myself but when I learned of the price, I said fuck it, its not worth it.
I can supply a copy of the bill to proof I din't pay more.

Jesus Christ. It's a good thing these cars are so easy to work on. I've done all the above for around $130.

Gen V? Did they not use the recommended OEM differential fluid that has the limited slip additive in it ?

I replaced the factory oil with Mobil 1 all around. I've always run Mobil 1 in all my cars except my drag car which I ran VR1 for engine oil.

    Are you adding friction modifier?

Would you still go the Mobil 1 route if you put a lot miles on a viper?

As ForTehNguyen said, Mobil 1 Diff fluid has the modifier already mixed in to it. My Viper with the current owner now has 12,000 miles on it. Absolutly no issues with the trans, diff, or engine and he tracks it hard! Mobil 1 has been in it since 500 miles.

Easiest way to replace the diff fluid is to have the old one replaced with a new one under warranty. Already comes pre-filled from the factory

This does make one wonder why SRT specified and used the very expensive and "rare" Castrol fluid instead of the Mobil 1. Usually, manufacturing companies are known for choosing the lowest cost components which meet their requirements. They seem to be driven to save pennies even on high dollar cars.

only revision i would make to that procedure is, as a general rule, always open the fill port first. If for some reason you cant get the fill port open but you just drained the diff or transmission, youre going to be in quite the pickle. It will drain smoother with the fill port removed also.

So its clear here that the MOPAR supplied diff fluid does not have the friction modifier. I purchased the Castrol Syntrax one, im assuming it does have it?

Your right man. All about making that $$$$$ for them.

We're kind-of reinventing the wheel here. Steve-Indy has a very comprehensive thread on this subject: https://driveviper.com/forums/thread...erential+fluid

I changed the diff. fluid on my ACR last night (3rd change/4080 miles). Before draining, the fluid was full to the fill port and I drained it into a glass jar. I then put 1.4L (47.34 fluid oz or right at 1.5 qt) of Mopar 68197929AA in another identical glass jar. The fluid I drained was 5 oz more than the recommended 1.4L, which means filling to the fill port (as I did last time) is slightly over-filling with regards to the Dodge recommendation. Does it matter? Don't know, but I doubt it. BTW, in 1030 miles and 2 track days, the fluid had changed color from "honey" to a medium-dark gray - no burnt smell and still very uniform with no debris or sludge. Another BTW, changing your own fluids gives you the opportunity to get all of the bits of tire rubber and track debris out of the belly pan and to clean things up a bit. I bet the dealer doesn't do that.

Except when my diff was replaced last year, my Viper tech told me he had to top off the fluid in the new diff, because it was low as delivered.

Was it low, or was it really 1.4L and a little below the fill plug, which he interpreted as "low". LOL

Just an FYI. Here is input from Dan Cragin about transmission fill level for track use (i.e. do not over fill until it leaks out the fill plug): https://driveviper.com/forums/thread...l=1#post300665

This kind of insight may be one reason why the recommended fill levels do not reach the fill plug hole.

Don't know. Jeff has been working on these cars for 25 years, so I trust his judgment.

If we use OEM Mopar axle lubricant, do we need to add an additive or not? Above procedure shows that you do need one, but others state that it is already included in the Mopar lubricant and there is no need to add the additive.
