Thing is, lambo, P1 LM, 918...none of those cars are true production. The random man can't just go out and buy that car without serious connections. It's "production" but barely. Vipers and definitely Corvettes...these are real deal production cars that anyone can track down and buy with ease. Viper ACR E will break into the 6's and in my book will be the fastest true production car to have done so. I hope ZR1 backs up Viper with at least close to 6 minute time...because then that'll be Murica right there...

    Bingo.
The "jogging" comment was spot on. There is a huge difference between 95% and 100%. A pro-driver friend told me once, "that single second is worth a million dollars" relative to lap times and drivers.

There is already a lot of confusion/complaints on the R&T FB article of people saying the GTS-R is not a street legal production car and they should have ran an ACR.

Clueless they are... naive and/or ignorant.

  5. #355
^assumed that would happen. The Internet isn't sharp enough to make the differentiation between an FIA GT homologated race car and a street legal production car with a decal.

Would have helped if they had called it an ACR with the caveat that they were badged and painted as GTSRs as a TRIBUTE to their legacy. Just like the C7R tribute addition - paint and decals.

Yep, a few of us already said this would happen. It's a "GTS-R commemorative edition ACR-E". But people keep calling it a GTS-R, so it will cause confusion. Oh well, as long as it's logged in the books as an ACR-E time people will figure it out.

For those without Facebook...interesting viewpoint of what's till possible

The Viper Ring Record Run Powered by Kumho and Co-sponsored by Prefix

Chris, I assure you the Lamborghini 6:52 time is fantasy. The Porsche 918 time is probably correct since they were running both electric AND gas for the run (had their electric run out, they would have been done). Even at a 7:03, our time is the fastest American car to ever lap the Ring. It was dry and conditions were good today BUT IT WAS OUR VERY FIRST LAP. If the Viper community wants to go no further, no problem. If you knew how much work went into this effort, you might not be so eager to dismiss future possibilities. Remember, other than the Porsche 918, no other production car in the world has ever done what we did IN OUR FIRST LAP.

Exactly what I argued earlier, but I got personally attacked for it.

    But whatever ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Remember, P1 LM is not a production car. It's a P1 GTR that was made street legal (and I am sure it's still not street legal in US) by a tuner firm. Total bullshit. As far as regular P1 is concerned, there are 8 of them for sale now (they are used, which makes sense considering the car went out of production in 2015). If you had the money, you could absolutely walk into a Mclaren dealership and order one back in 2013.

I don't have a lot of verified info on a 918, but I remember a few new ones being available towards the end of the production run (although without the Weissach package). As far as the Lambo, they will sell as many Performantes as people will pay for. At $275K base, average cars ordered by dealers will be pushing $300K+, putting them very close to the upcoming 488 Speciale, so yes, a random man with $300K in the bank can just walk into a Lamborghini dealership now and order a Performante.

I am guessing the ZR1 will not beat the Viper's ring time but the new mid-engine Corvette definitely may when it comes in in a few years (and if someone at GM does not skimp on cooling). By then, quite a few of the high-end sports cars will have some sort of an auxiliary electric drive system, so sub-7 min time will become more widespread.

What I am personally waiting for is for Performante ordering guide to be available. It better have the Pzero Trofeo tires as an option listed or Lambo's record will be vaporware.

2017 Dodge Viper ACR Sets Unofficial 7:03.45 Lap Time in First Nurburgring Attempt
A crowdfunded effort by independent Viper devotees brought the American sports car to the 'Ring with Dominik Farnbacher at the wheel.
    ERIC MEYER @PHOTOBYMEYER

    BY BOB SOROKANICH
    JUL 26, 2017

A crowdfunding-powered privateer effort has done what Dodge never officially attempted to do: Set a Nurburgring lap time in the soon-to-be-discontinued fifth-generation Viper. With professional racer Dominik Farnbacher at the wheel, a brand-new, bone-stock Viper ACR just set a 7:03.45 lap time at the famed German track. This was the first traffic-free timed lap on a dry track for the Viper.

The Viper 'Ring Record Run powered by Kumho and co-sponsored by Prefix brought two brand-new, bone-stock 2017 Viper ACRs in the commemorative GTS-R spec (just a livery, no mechanical changes) to the famed German racetrack. Funded largely by private donations from individual Viper enthusiasts, and utilizing cars straight off the showroom floor of Texas dealership Viper Exchange, the effort marks the first Nurburgring lap record attempt in the current fifth-generation model.

Farnbacher, the driver who set today's lap time, was the man at the wheel for the Viper's last Nurburgring record attempt in 2011. Back then, Farnbacher drove a factory-backed fourth-generation Viper ACR to a 7:12.13 lap time.

Since the introduction of the current-generation Viper, Dodge has refused to return to the 'Ring to pursue a new lap time, opting instead to claim production-car lap records at 13 road courses in the United States. But with production of the American sports car set to end later this year, a private group of die-hard Viper enthusiasts raised money through crowdfunding, sponsorship, and private donations to bring the car to Germany for one last crack at the 'Ring.

It wasn't easy: the privateers originally scheduled one hour of closed-track lap time on Monday, July 24th, to attempt to set a lap time. But heavy rains all day scuttled those plans, leaving the team only able to practice during open lapping sessions with significant traffic, often under wet, rainy conditions. When a brief window of track time became available this afternoon, the team scrambled into action.

Road & Track has been traveling with the privateer Viper team in Germany all week. The lap time was set on brand-new, stock, street-legal Kumho Ecsta V720 tires (295/25 front, 355/30 rear on factory 19-inch wheels) supplied by Kumho, a sponsor of the attempt. And this is only the first lap attempt: the team plans to go for another flying lap later this week.

Update: We've clarified that these are actually bone stock GTS-R Commemorative Edition Viper ACRs running for the record.

Road & Track was invited to witness the Viper's 'Ring attempt by the organizers of the run. R&T paid for all travel and lodging related to the event. - Ed.

    Nice update. Very clear now.

Now for another day to help lower that record.

1st lap only guys. This car is capable of doing a sub 6:50 with perfect conditions. Wait till Friday, if the conditions aren't good they'll raise money for the August attempt. Hoping it's totally dry Friday.

Ok, well I think this proves that the car is very, very fast. So how about it FCA? Time to open your pocketbook and spend a fraction of doing a Dodge commercial and helping fund this effort in case the crew has to come back in August. They have proven their passion and skill......just look at the world wide press FCA is getting and it is all positive!!

We all know that the Viper is no longer going to be in production, but at least give the fans of the Viper and Dodge in general a reason to be proud and show the world what FCA can build. A 7:03 out of a legitimate production vehicle is smoking, imagine what a few more laps can deliver in favorable conditions!!

Who do we contact at FCA to help in case the team has to go back in August???
