Need some immediate help Looking to buy a gen 3 coupe

I'm new to the viper platform and viper forums, but not the auto / forum world.

Need help though from the guru's here. Owner that has the car right now stated that there are 3 CEL codes on the car due to de-cat pipes, stock cats were removed. I looked up the codes and it seems they have a little to do with emissions but I'm not familiar with any of them.

So ultimately I just want to ask if anyone out there has had these same codes when running w/out cats.

I'm getting the stock cats with the car and will be re-installing them but I want to be sure these issues will be resolved before I purchase. Can anyone confirm they will go away or have gone away for others?

    Codes:
    P0141
    O2 Sensor 1/2 Heater Failure

    P0161
    P0161 2/2 O2 Sensor Heater Failure

    P0158
    P0158 2/2 O2 Sensor Shorted to Voltage

any information is very much appreciated. The car seems solid but spending this kind of money I don't want issues. Specially because I am required to pass emissions in Missouri.

    thanks!

I think I had the same codes showing up on my Gen4 last summer. I think they may have been hidden by the Mopar ECU being installed, but then were shown when I switched over to HPTuners. That being said, I replaced both of my downstream O2's and that cleared it all up. One of the O2's was barely holding onto the wires and I'm sure was shorting out here and there. The other one wasn't as bad, but the wires had been crimped a bit. Like I said, replacing both of those cleared up the errors in my case.

One thing to keep in mind though for emissions is you'll have a pretty hard time passing emissions w/o the cats. You will constantly be throwing errors on your O2's or if you need to do a sniffer test it'll blow too strong. If the car has a Mopar/Arrow ECU installed, you'll never pass either b/c it disables a number of different codes and tests which shows up as "not ready" when they do the OBD check for emissions. I fixed this with going to HPT where you can suppress a number of codes, but still get it to go into the "Ready" state.

If you haven't had a chance to get some eyes on the car because it's out of state or something, I would definitely recommend having someone locally take a look. Most people on the forum are willing to lend a hand, I know a number of guys did for me when I was searching mine out.

    Good luck!

Gotcha. Yeah I'll have the stock cats and they will go back on. Car has been tuned but I'm unsure of what it was tuned with. Simply sketchy situation in general but the car itself looks very well cared for.

I do remember having a mopar ECU on 2 of my 3 SRT-4s when I owned them. That was a nightmare not having the stock ecu. Neither ever passedeissios. Didn't know these cars had the same situation.

If the word sketchy is anywhere in the description, I'd walk away and wait for another Viper to come along.

I agree with the others sentiments. Unless you were getting the car for a steal there are way too many other perfect GEN 3/4 cars out there for a very reasonable price to go through the headaches of sorting out a car that isn't right.

it's a gen 3 coupe for what I would consider a very good price. Searched far and wide and cannot find another for anywhere near the price of this one. Not to mention it's in very good condition

Year, miles, color, etc? What do you consider a very good price? I hope everything works out with the car, if you decide to get it.

There is always a reason there is a low price , but you could spend thousands getting this back to running properly , but more important what State are you in as you could have other issues if you have to pass emissions. We see this all the time where someone thinks they stole a Viper and then spends 5-10k getting it back to right with all the issues it has.

No mention about miles, tire condition, condition of window regulators, leaking oil lines, paint work, etc. Add some of those concerns to the repairing of the cats and exhaust system and you could easily spend 3-7K on your bargain Snake??

Ok i dont know if this will help. But i own a gen 3 coupe and when I did cat deletes and had a cat delete tune through a sct tuner from roe racing, i still had a check engine light.. Sean Roe explained that the check engine light does happen occasionally on some vipers it a wierd phenomenon he said.. so to get rid of light he said to plug in the 02 sensors but have them zip tied somewhere but not installed. This is called "free air".. and i tell u this guy knows his shit.. as soon as i did that check engine light has been gone for 2 years now..so if u have the secondary 02 sensors I would definitely try that. Also make sure u have a cat delete tune........ OH AND By The Way If u need original cats I have mine sitting in the garage Uninstalled at 8k miles ..

I'll just be reinstalling the stock cats. My plan isn't to Mod this car outside of exhaust and a few exterior changes. I just want to enjoy it.

I had the following error codes due to a Corsa exhaust on my car when I bought it 2 years ago - Gen 3 2006 coupe First Edition

    P0158 (2/2 O2 Sensor Shorted to Voltage)

    P0138 (O2 Sensor 1/2 Circuit Voltage High)

After switching back to stock exhausts which were supplied with the car, I had the codes cleared and they never came back

I wouldn't say very good price but it wasn't over priced.

    2006, 14k miles
