CALVO MOTORSPORTS HEADS AND CAM RESULTS Bonus ARH vs Belanger Headers dyno comparo

CALVO MOTORSPORTS HEADS AND CAM RESULTS – Bonus: ARH vs. Belanger Headers dyno comparo., SAME CAR, SAME DYNO, SAME TUNE.

Several weeks ago I decided I wanted to do a heads and cam package on my ’13 GTS. I considered the available packages from Arrow racing, A&C Performance, and Calvo motorsports . Distance (I’m in South Florida), cost, turn around time and most important real world performance results were my deciding factors.

I privately contacted as many owners as I could find with the different packages and got their input on the performance on the package as well as the drive ability of the different set ups. I gathered as much info as I could from ½ mile events, ¼ mile times, street racing videos and dynos from all over social media, from owners with cars on full street trim and on all kinds of weather conditions.

After I gathered all of this data and talked to a lot of people I was confident that Antonio Calvo from Calvo motorsports was the best choice to do this build for me given my criteria and HP goals.

Antonio quoted me a very attractive price to upgrade my current bolt on HP tuned set up. This car made 600 rwhp STD. corrected and 584 rwhp SAE corrected on HP tuned. On the ARROW Stage One set up the car dynode 559 rwhp STD, and 542 SAE rwhp. All numbers with full Belanger exhaust, cats, UD pulley and KN filter.

Also for the record this car had passed the R29 and R28 recalls had 4100 miles and never consumed any oil. Maybe ½ a quart since I’ve had it.

Antonio took the motor apart, checked my bearings which to my surprise showed a lot of abnormal wear and signs of debris. He replaced all of the rods and main bearings, cleaned the block and did his crank oiling mod to the crank shaft. Great work!! On top of that cut me a huge break on cost.

His Heads and cam package also includes bigger injectors , as according to him the stock ones max out on his dyno and run out of fuel on his Heads and cam Combination.

Also Included on his package are his solid motor mounts, and his fuse box heat shield. He was really committed to make power and produce a top quality set up that would make both of us proud!, my kind of guy and the reason I went with him.

The heads and cam on this set up are Calvo’s proprietary stuff and he would not release any specs on either one of them. Not a problem with me , all I care about is the final product.

    Now, on to the exhaust:

Car arrived to Calvo with full Belanger headers, H. Flow cats and Belanger Cat-back.
Now, there have been several posts and Debates on the forums on the headers, Belanger vs. ARH.

Vendors have claimed that the differences are under 5 rwhp on Head and cam cars, I decided to give the Belangers a try, BUT changed to a full Calvo motorsports custom Cat-less full 3” cat-back exhaust as the Belanger was catted and the Belanger Cat-back reduces from 3” to 2-1/2” after the mufflers.

The car was finished and put on the dyno. According to Antonio the numbers came in lower than expected and the graph shape was not how he wanted it to be, although peak numbers were decent.
He did a one over look of everything and we decided to change out the headers for the ARH design 5-1 race collectors with scavenger spike to see if they would free up some HP.

Not only Antonio gave me the ARH headers at HIS COST, and did not charge me any $$ for the header swap, but he removed my old exhaust, boxed it and shipped it to a friend of mine who bought it from me. Antonio charged me ZERO $ for this extra service.

New ARH headers installed and back to the dyno.
Not only the ARH headers picked up 24 rwhp over the Belangers, but they threw the tune off, same car, same tune, same dyno., just header swap.

After further tuning the car made better numbers, but Antonio insisted the numbers and dyno graph shape was not what he wanted to see. Much respect for him for staying committed, any of the shops that I’ve dealt with in the past would have sent this car back like it was and not a word; But not Calvo.
He told me the car would not leave his shop until he was 100% satisfied with it, no matter what.

Although I appreciated all his effort and honesty, I felt bad for him as this was costing him time and money and was not costing me a penny over the agreed package amount. Talk about a stand up guy, a rarity on this industry.

He went ahead and meticulously checked every detail of the build, and found a defect with one of the manufactured parts., took care of it and got the car ready for the final dyno tune session.

This is a stock bottom end motor tuned on 93 octane pump gas, ARH headers, cat-less 3” Calvo Cat-back exhaust and Calvo proprietary heads and cam set up with bigger injectors, and solid motor mounts. Stock short block and stock CR.

See dyno graph below: HP 693 SAE, 654 TQ Uncorrected numbers 707/667 and STD numbers 712 rwhp and 672 rwtq!!

I got more than I was promised and can’t wait until I get this bad MOFO back in town and go through the gears. Car picked up 110 rwhp from the bolt on HP tuned set up and 153 rwhp from the Arrow Stage 1 bolt on set up. 180++ rwhp from stock. UNREAL!! Similar Huge TQ increase as well from Stock and bolt on set up.

I’m very pleased with the results, treatment and overall experience with this shop. During my build time communication was great, and Antonio kept me up to date with all the process and updated me constantly with pics and text messages.

Guy really goes the extra mile to make sure you feel 100% confident in his abilities and process. Delivered results speak for themselves.

If you are on the fence about doing a Heads and cam package on your Viper, I highly recommend him.

Sounds like quite the adventure to get to the finished product. Still on HPT I assume?

    Very nice end result.

Nice job. Interesting that you note that your engine, passing R28, and no oil usage, already showed abnormal signs of wear. Just reinforces what a lot of us are concerned about.

Congrats, if I had the money, I think would do an "upgrade" with Antonio.

Pretty amazing numbers. Congrats! Just curious, did they Gen 5 Balanger's have the pickle in the collector?

    Very nice! Congratulations!

Yea no shock on the bearings, Antonio has reported pulling apart 2017 engines with super low miles and worn bearings, I don't think R28 has any bearing (hehe) on anything at this point.

I've talked with Antonio about his pkgs and finding a car, etc., and he's a guy who will go so far above and beyond, it's so obvious what a class act he is and his results are undeniable.

Congrats on the results you got, just amazing numbers and curve there. And this story shows how Antonio works on a car as if it's his own, it's not done until it's perfect. Just awesome. We'll need vids when you get the beast back.

Congratulations brother! Those are seriously impressive numbers. Wish I lived closer, I'd love to go for a ride in that thing!

Excellent numbers. Is this tuned through the stock ECU or with a standalone?

    Hell Yeah!

Nice numbers for sure! If the car picked up +24rwhp with ARE 1 3/4" over the Belanger 1 3/4".....makes me wonder what it would have made with BBG 1 7/8". I think these heads/cam cars or 9L packages would really benefit with the larger primary. Can't wait to hear the clips and see the vids of this beast either way.

awesome numbers. What does a setup like that cost assuming it's a stock starting point? How would this setup do in a car being road raced quite a bit?

I would be curious to see if the pickle was removed, if the power would have been as much as the ARH.
