Upgrading base speaker system to GTS speaker system

So I was reading a post on the Facebook group about this upgrade. At first I thought it was silly, since the base system sounds pretty good, but from peoples descriptions and the estimated prices shown it now sounds like it might be a worthwhile upgrade. They also made it sound like it was a pretty simple task for the dealer to do.

However, when I went to the dealer they were pretty confused. They had no idea what I needed to do the upgrade and couldn't even begin to look up the parts required, and certainly couldn't get to a point where they could quote the install cost.

I was wondering if anyone has any insight into how to make this a smooth (and affordable) affair. I can't seem to find the Facebook thread that was discussing it, but will keep searching.

You can just plug the speakers in, and the dealer can enable them with the factory tool. The plugs and such are all there already, just need to put the speakers in and turn them on.

Hi, i have been professionally installing mobile electronics for years, Are you looking for that direct factory fit approach or would you like a better set of aftermarket components for you audio system that are cheaper and sound better, obviously each one has their advantages, if you are keen on doing the work yourself, the factory fit approach would be better but if not highly recommend aftermarket

That sounds reasonable, but then the problem I face is that the dealer has no idea what to order. They don't get many vipers here so they have no idea what I'm talking about..

Thanks, this is good info, it's actually a bit more work than I expected. Are people just adding additional speakers, or are they upgrading even the existing ones to HK?

Hopefully the upgrade kit becomes available again - it still seems to be on perpetual backorder. Rather than getting the parts from your dealer, you could order from one of the parts suppliers for a lot less money - but as noted, the upgrade kit is on backorder. So, neither your dealer nor the parts suppliers can get it presently. I'm hoping that changes soon because I plan on doing the same upgrade.

Oh ok thanks, I'll check back in a couple months and maybe someone will have a complete organized kit that I can just bring in to the dealer. Normally I'd install this type of stuff myself, but on a newer car I'd rather have them do it so I don't *#$@ it up.

There's definitely a complete kit - it's normally a dealer-installed option, and it has just about everything you need (I think it lacks some weather guards for a couple of the speakers, so you need to get those separately). Installing it is apparently very easy - takes about an hour, and no special tools are required other than a trim stick that you can get at any parts store. The only thing the dealer needs to do is plug their system into the OBDII port and enable the new speakers to work.

You can do the install yourself it's not hard at all. Then print out the instructions to upgrade the radio software and hand it to the dealer. All of the speaker wires are there you just have to plug them in and screw the speakers in. I have a feeling that speaker upgrade kit (part # upgrade kit 82213535 - Quantity 1 - 12 to 18 Speaker Upgrade Kit) will never be available again, but I have listed all the parts separately.

There are dealers with a lonnnnng list of customer orders for the kit that have been in queue for a while, if the kit does come available again, it'd be interesting to see if it didn't sell out again just trying to fill pending orders.

A dealer told me that the upgrade kit is not currently available and it has a weird code attached to it that he's never seen on a part. Sounds like it is beyond being back-ordered.

The speaker upgrade kit actually gives you an extra speaker you will not use, the center dash speaker is already installed in every car. But it does give you the upper door speaker covers to replace the blanks there now. That is a part you CANNOT source separately and believe me I tried. But if you are handy you can make your own. Buying the speakers required separately is cheaper than the kit and will be the only way to do it as that kit has been backordered forever. It's worth it.

Its probably the only Mopar aftermarket upgrade in history that was actually reasonably priced. They could have charged twice the price and it still would have been cheaper than getting the exact same speakers installed on the assembly line. I'm very glad I did it!

And in my case my install is better than factory. I used the $50.00 EACH buckets for the four sub woofers behind the seat and Dodge stopped using them on the later builds, those speakers are open to the chassis and road.

I installed the MOPAR speaker upgrade kit 2 years ago , but couldn't find a tech competent enough to get them working until last month. WOW! They add some serious punch. Seems like I belong in a high school parking lot at times.
