If you are looking into a new GoPro for your track videos DONT

Just want to give everyone a heads-up. DO NOT waste your money on the new GoPro Hero 5 if you are looking at getting a new camera for filming at the track or DIY or anything with where you want to have a usable audio track.

I finally gave up with the Hero 5 and and switching back to the Hero 4. There are all kind's of phantom noises, volume inconsistencies, and just terrible quality with the sound. The only solution is to buy a massive specific $50 GoPro audio adapter (Which counteracts the whole purpose of using a small recording device) that is about the exact same size as the GoPro itself. You then need to purchase an external mic of course.

Tried dealing with tech support on the issue. Comes down to the fact that the new GoPro has 3 mics and is constantly switching between each one and there is no way to turn this off in the settings. They even sent me a replacement unit under warranty. Same issue. Tried to record a video when I installed my new Borla catback and it sounded like I was filming with a flip-phone. Brutal...

Save yourself the money/headache and grab the older model or another brand.

That's good info. I use a Go Pro Black 3+ a lot and although the audio also sucks it seems the haven't made any improvements.

Great post, thanks. I'm going to run my old GoPro Hero 2 in a skeleton case as a second camera and use an external wired mic for the audio.

Out of curiosity, was your audio equally bad from multiple locations on the car?

I use an external corded mic, sounds MUCH better and you can place it out of the wind/noise areas.

Yeah, I have used the camera to film DIY videos, tried to get a sound clip of my exhaust, even just touching the camera makes a sound like it fell off a table. There are many others with the same complaint and yet no solution. Just want to warn others before dropping $400+ on it. Also battery life is terrible and only lasts about 1hr.

This is ideal with the older models. The Hero5 requires this HUGE box adapter that is awkward and is almost the size of the camera. No other aftermarket adapters will work at this time as they made some sort of coding in the box. This also applies to batteries, only GoPro batteries will work as they put some sort of chip in it that will throw an error if you try to use an aftermarket one.

Maybe use an extension cord between the camera and adapter? Then, it would be out of the way, at least... But that thing IS huge. They may be Betamaxing themselves out of some business by making everything proprietary. Sucks.

I've got 3 of them and so far so good. The in-car video in this clip was shot with one of these.

These are actually a very good option for capturing video. I bought something similar in the $50-$80 range off amazon with good reviews. Great video quality. Sound was whatever but if you are looking for a cheap solution it wasn't bad at all. Plus mounting it to the exterior of the car if it fell off or anything happened it wasn't a big deal lol.
