Say you buy a car from out of state and it takes the transport company 2 weeks to pick the car up. How are you protected that the car is the same condition when it is picked up? Is there some way that I am protected against the car not getting on the transport in the same condition, does the dealer do a written check before it gets on the transport, does the transport company check the vehicle out?

Both will examine the car, any deficiencies will be noted and photographed. These notes and photos should be transmitted to you. You use these for comparison at delivery and anything not noted is the responsibility of the transporter.

I purchased my Viper out of state sight unseen and transported. My transport company caught a decent amount of "overlooked" damage by Palmer Dodge in Georgia. Small chipped paint, scratches, and a broken rear third brake light. They noted the flaws on their documentation and Palmer Dodge had to sign it agreeing to the pre pickup damage.

Any reputable transport company will follow this protocol as they dont want to be blamed for any damage they did not cause.

I was told the out of state dealer can charge the tax from your state.

What you read is correct. Some places like Las Vegas don't make you pay sales tax for private party sales if the car is selling for less than what the original owner paid for it. Other than that, you pay tax based on what your bill of sale price states. So, I'll let you determine how you can manipulate that situation.

And of course they pay the tax to YOUR state. You should be able to negotiate to keep it off the invoice.

Donato, the answer depends on the laws of the state you live in and where you buy for. Some answers above appear to me to be not correct for all states. Some places use some kind of calculation to determine sales tax rather than "Bill of sale" price because they have figured out how to get around people gaming the system. I believe that California charges sales tax on a private party sale even if the buyer is from out of state when the car is delivered in-state. If it is delivered out of state, it does not charge tax. This is from my research when considering buying a car there. I'd like to hear from someone that has actually done this, though, with a California private seller. I can imagine there are a wide variety of laws.

Im in texas and had mine transported from massachusetts, from pick up to delivery took all off 2 days, thurs evening to sat morning, i had the dealer take pic of odo and body condition, after all said and done i deffinetly recommend Best west trans. But just like anything else you cant be afraid to communicate with the dealer and ask them what you would like to have done

Thanks Bill, just checked with my dmv in AZ and they said the dealer in Texas can charge me tax and do the registration and plates also. The car is a 2016 and its been sitting at this dealership for quite a while, anything I should ask or have checked? Also I was thinking about hiring wegolook.com.... what do you think?

They might be able to charge you , but most States/Dealers will not do registration and plates in another State, it is usually the customers responsibility. If it is new and been sitting there for quite awhile then ask about scratches , whether folks were allowed to get in and out of it, test drives, etc.

They said the car has no scratches and there is only 24 miles on it. If I have the car checked by a service and then when the transport picks it up they said they take pictures and check the car over but when it gets here there are damages that were not there when I had the car checked.... what would I be able to do then? Say something happens between the time the car is checked and the transport picks it up, then what?

Yup same happend with me and Palmer. DONT BUY from them!!! Lucky for me the shipping guys were super cool guys and had pics at the dealership showing said damage that Sean and dealer denied and blamed on shipper but they also gave me a copy of the pick up form showing all the damage on the car and imagine that it was signed off on by Sean himself! I have done about 12 deals sight unseen with not one issue with dealers all over and this dealer was a joke and a nightmare to work with from Sean in sales to Dustin the manger and Jody Cruce the owner. Yes you can get some money back in a case like this but doesnt help with your time and effort when they could be honest up front, discount the car for the issues or just fix them before they send it!

Always a few bad dealers ruin it for good dealers who stand by their word and are honest.

I would ask somebody on the forum to possibly see if they would go take a look for you. Most would be happy to and my guess is that more knowledgeable people reside on the forum than 3rd party inspectors.

My experience with them mirrors yours brother. Learned a lot from it. Dealing with Sean was a nightmare. If I could go back and do it all over again I would definitely go with a dealer on this forums.

General Manager sent me pictures but I can't tell from all the glare so I placed an order to have wegolook check the car out and take pictures... hopeful they will get it done by this weekend and I will get the pictures and the report back on Monday. Got a feeling that someone else is looking at the car and could get bought before I can even see the pictures.....
