    2013 GTS Questions

    I may have finally found the Gen V to purchase but I have a few questions since it seems I've been finding many different answers.

    1.) The car has a R28 and R29 recall out (not done yet). For the 10yr/100k extension, is it only R28 cars? Or is it all just dependent of the VIN itself to determine if it qualifies? Since this out has not had the recalls done, I know it wouldn't qualify until they are.

    2.) Extended bumper to bumper warranties, the car would still be eligible for them correct? Best one to get is through Dodge itself?

    3.) I didn't see much in terms of differences between a 2013 and say 2015 GTS. I am assuming all Gen V GTS's came with the same options?

    4.) This will be my daily... Anything to watch out for?

    I would want the R28 and R29 done and have results of the R28 before buying. The R28 is the one that may give you the extended warrantee if the vehicle passes the test and has not been modified. If modified then the gray matter enters the equation. Good luck with your decision and potental purchase.

    13 GTS did not come with the StopTech rotors standard (could never understand this), I think they became standard in '14. I think all R28 cars got the extended warranty. However, I wouldn't buy this car until AFTER the dealer does the recall, and it passes R28.

    Watch out for the drivers that want to take pictures. I daily mine and it makes me so nervous when I drive by someone and they are trying to drive and take pics.

    Take all the pics you want at a stop light but taking a pic while driving is just as bad as texting and driving.

    Me personally, I wouldn't worry if the car had passed the R28... If it has great! If it still needs to be tested and if fails you get a new engine that you can break-in, still great! Either way the car comes with the updated 10y/100K extension.

    The bumper to bumper warranty is a little different and depends on the in service date of the vehicle. If the car is still within the 3/36 then you can still purchase the FCA bumper to bumper warranty. If it's outside of 3yrs or 3600kmiles I don't think so, but I've been wrong before.

    I wish my 2013 GTS came with slotted rotors. Needs new ones already @ 11k.
    IMO....I have the ability to make my Viper my daily... I just don't want to. I'd go crazy if I had to wash it 2-3 times per week. I cannot stand to have a dirty Viper. It's a lovely and beautiful car but it is rough getting in and out, doesn't have great storage space, and i never drive it in the rain. I wouldn't want to deal with traffic going back and fourth to work...etc
    Having the 10/100k warranty on my car really is nice to have. I did buy the 5/60k Chrysler bumper to bumper warranty when I bought my Viper and it has paid for itself probably 3x over already.

    I would not buy that Viper if the R28 and R29 recalls haven't been done. What if it fails the test? You really want to buy a car that needs a new motor already?

    Also, the '13 could have the track pack, it was a must when I bought my '13, this will give it the stop tech brakes and sidewinder2 wheels. HK upgrade was also a call out. In '13 the range on how a GTS could be speced out was pretty huge, it'd be good to get the window sticker and see all options it had, you can have a $20+k swing on the options. Did you go to the mopar customer site and plug in the vin? This will show you all the recalls, TSBs and campaigns, whatever. And what's been done and pending, on '13s there can be a few. You either make a requirement they all be done in advance, or work the price down if they're not done and you deal with it at a dealer.

    Personally I'd make sure the bumper to bumper is in place, you can verify with any dealer, including getting a print out of the service history, I've done this on multiple vipers I was looking at, so you have all work done, and warranty info. The power train warranty will cover the engine, but I'd like that bumper to bumper in place in case of little things. My '13 had some rattles and what not that developed, all perfectly fixed under warranty with new hardware, etc. Verify the cars not modded, it can impact coverage, if you won't mod it, then I'd do extended warranty, although the power train warranty gives long coverage and is the most risky/expensive items you'd want covered.

    As for DD, in a GTS IMHO you can DD if you have the weather for it, it's very comfy to me and very well behaved.

    I had my car a month and took it in for the test and it failed. No big deal. Drove the car around for a few more weeks waiting for the replacement engine to be delivered to the dealer. Took the car in and it was back out 5 days later with a new motor. Granted this is not by daily driver.

    Pete, you need new rotors at that mileage? Seems unusual. They are pretty durable.

    I'm ok if the engine would need to be replaced eventually IF it was covered under warranty. Plus I would hope the new ones are less prone to failure so it would give me a more comfortable feeling for putting more miles on it. I want a bumper to bumper just because (not offense) it's still a Dodge product. I like the car but I've heard my fair share of stories about the quality of some of them.

    I've seen the service history and its not much just due to the miles. Airbags have been replaced along with inspections. I will not purchase a modded car or will I mod this one. I'm getting this car to step away from the modding scene and into a car that has the same performance along with a warranty. I'm tired of fixing stuff myself.

    The in-service date was late 2014

    One thing about the engine replacement process. Until earlier this year, it wasn't taking too long. It failed, they ordered a new one, and it was done in a couple weeks. Now, the process (from people here who have gone through it) can take weeks or months - engine is torn down first, proven not to have been modded, etc. Something to think about if it is going to be a DD.

    As long as they give me a loaner vehicle that isn't a POS Avenger, that wouldn't bother me too much

    They pulsate when i come down from 100mph+

    Ha! They loaned me a Cherokee and I think an Avenger would be better. I've had a loaner Cherokee twice and in both cars the transmission felt like it had issues.

    Sounds like you must have had some major problems after the standard 3 year OE warranty expired? I have wondered about getting the 2 year extension. I have only ever done that on one vehicle and never used it. However, with all of the electronics on the Gen V, it does make me think about getting the extended warranty. ( I am not an owner yet. Just a prospective buyer.)

    Knowing what I know now, if my engine went I would push for an arrow rebuild over a new engine if that happened. It would be much cheaper for FCA and you could get a true worry free engine out of it.

    I had my 2014 engine replaced with a 2016 engine, but I am still not completely comfortable. Arrow rebuild would have been about 1/3 the price of a replacement for FCA.

    I drive mine every other day to and from work, about 33 miles one way on mostly highway. My office has plenty of space away from cars so I only worry when I need to run errands and the parking is tight. Other than that I have no problems and will drive my truck if the weather is really bad. Mine is modded and everyone can hear me coming!

    You're driving even with all the crap on these roads? Mine was last out on New Year's Eve, and it had sat the whole month of December! Sorry for the hijack,

    Brave soul...Mine got parked in Sept and with Ohio weather may come out in April or May? Never leave unattended...Then again waited 20 years to get my first one so I'm paranoid! Scott

    I don't think the tear down would be necessary if the R28 test recommended a change, I would think? And if it does recommend a change, it doesn't have to be done that day. Pick a time that works for you, and drive the bag off of it while you're waiting.

    I know when they replaced mine there was no tear down needed. Oil results shipped, results back, appointment sent and engine pulled. Have a picture of the old engine sitting on its oil pan on the shop floor complete from oil filter to intake.

    But things have changed since yours was done. Eugene on here with his stock ACR may still be waiting. I believe they are tearing down all engines now, R28 or not. Hopefully I'm wrong.
