    New air intake and throttle bodies worth the buck

    Looking to upgrade the stock air intakes from the factory bulky box to something like pictured ($460) And also thought about replacing the throttle bodies with 70mm ones ($700) Pretty pricey was wondering if anyone has done either one and was it worth the price?





    also curious my current vipe only has one throttle cable (gen 2) but in the intake pic I see separate throttle cables? is that on the newer gens? sorry first vipe just leaning things....

    Gen 1. I have the 70mm throttle bodies still sitting in the box...I ordered mine direct from Accufab. $100 cheaper.

    Why would you remove the airbox which keeps the hot air outside the box and only let's the cold air in to just two open filters that will Suck in hot air and thus make you loose power.
    Explain that "upgrade"

    Upgrade? Where did you come up with that term to apply it to those parts?

    Review your air intake... You ever heard of the term "cold air intake?" It's an over abused term even by K&N to describe some plastic junk that adds massive hp to a car. Well that one - the one in your pic - would be a "hot air" intake lol. One of the most stupid things you could do to a vipe.

    Review the 70mm TB's... What improvements to your engine / hp have you achieved to make the need for 70mm TB's relevant? Are you aware that at stock hp levels they will actually drop the hp in your vipe?

    Clear back around 1999 or 2000 Woodhouse Motorsports sent 4 different cars to the Dyno with the bigger throttle bodies and none increased horsepower, so ......................save your bucks as mentioned already. It was a fad back then my some tuners , but went out of favor super quick with guys running Viper Days and other events.

    A few of us had the same results with the c-4 corvettes back in the day. When we installed headers and removed the cat we gained about 10 hp with the bigger throttle body. It's a waste if you don't open up the exhaust. I'll try them since I have headers, no cats and a 3" cat back.

    Geronimo --- ???? Why , three of the cars we dyno were Viper Days Race Cars --- headers, no cats, etc. No increase in any of them including my 98 GTS with just a Corsa Catback . Save your money.

    Hello Hollywood_145,

    I thought I would chime in on this as the picture you posted is the same air intake system I have on my car.

    Now While it looks good, as others have said, it does nothing for performance as if you are in traffic or the car is getting hot on track, all you are doing is pulling Hot air into the Engine (which is not what you want).

    If you make up a shroud around the filters to insulate them from the hot air that will help.

    One of the Better mods is to use the standard airbox but purchase some high performance rectangular K&N filters.
    Another mod is to remove the rainwater deflector baffle in the stock air box and fabricate a flat plate to fit on top of the box. (which will allow more airflow to the filters).

    If you still have the rubber baffle tubes between the stock air box and the throttle bodies, then it's worth swapping them out for smooth tubes.

    No point in buying bigger throttle bodies unless you are doing Performance heads cam, exhaust etc. Not worth the bucks.

    That air intake will only make more power when its cool out and the fan is not on. The stock airbox with smooth tubes and K&N filters gives a proven 12hp gain. Bigger throttle bodies only make power on big cam motors and only at peak rpm. Original GTSR engines ran the stock throttle bodies and intake and still make 600hp.

    Great , so sell them and get some extra money to pay off those Christmas bills . We saw around a 20% loss those many years ago installing them.

    Don't have any unpaid Christmas bills but something to think about.

    This is great info, Bill. Thank you for the contribution. I had a vendor once advise me to do this exact upgrade as one of the "must have" upgrades, when I reached out for best bang for buck advice. These dyno backed empirical opinions are truly most valuable contributions.
