Another muffler post help me decide

Last month I made a post about just replacing the mufflers (http://driveviper.com/forums/threads...-Just-mufflers) well I totally did NOT do that and went in a complete opposite direction.

I ended up picking up a set of ARH long tubes with HFC's and I stuck with the stock mufflers. Happy enough with the sound but...I now have a vibration at idle and goes away as soon as you get off idle. It's annoying.

On a quick search I have seen a couple threads about aftermarket headers and stock mufflers rub against the side sills. And I think that is where the noise is coming from. I have already checked to make sure I have the exhaust tip more forward in the outlet due to the expansion when hot that's not it. The vibration is way more forward.

If I am going through all the trouble to take the side sills off again I am just going to put mufflers on it and stop playing games. But now which ones. The way I see it I have 3 options.

So it would be AHR long tubes with HFC's and:

    ARH mufflers
    Corsa mufflers
    Belanger mufflers

For anyone that decides to click "other" explain please. If you don't mind.

The only other mufflers I know of are the VE and Agency Power titanium mufflers. While titanium is nice I am not that big of a track rat that I can justify the $2k plus for the titanium setups.

I'm betting the header on the passenger side is vibrating against the frame and not a muffler issue. I've had to take my passenger side off before and I noticed the initial installer had to "massage" an opening because the header was hitting it.

Already checked in the area. I can see from the underside and it looks all clear. But I will check again.

I have a set of unused new corsa mufflers that are already ceramic coated for sale in the parts section of the forum.

Interested in this thread as well. Picked up a set of ARH w/ hf cats and am looking to replace the rest of the exhaust system as well. Need a 3" option unless the inlet of the stock muffler is 3" (I think it's a 2.5"). If its a three I'll use the stockers for now.

There really is a huge difference in sound when comparing Belanger and American Racing. Belanger headers and exhaust have a significantly deeper tone. American Racing headers and exhaust have a much higher pitch.

All comes down to preference. I LOVE the sound of my Belanger headers.

Corsa are also a much higher pitch than the Belangers.

Its all about the materials. Belangers are made from mild steel. Corsa and American Racing exhaust are stainless steel. Its thinner and reflects the sound differently. Its almost like the thicker metal absorbs some of the high tone.

I need to make some vids......

    Yup....

But has anyone married Belanger mufflers to ARH headers....what kind of sound will that out put?

Your mileage may vary, but I loved the sound of my H/C Gen III with Corsas (M&M headers, no cats). Musclecar sound at idle. No highway drone. Wicked, raspy howl above 4k rpm.

M&M headers are copies of Belangers headers. So no wonder they sounded deep. You got any vids? Id love to hear the corsas.

I wish I had a good clip of it under throttle. I tried to record it when we dyno'd it, but it was so freakin loud it cut the audio on my phone. Here's the only clip I still have, mostly just a demonstration of how loud it was, and how nasty the cam sounded. Damn I miss the sound of this car.

Belanger's all the way complete system. I ran Corsa on my other Gen V. Deeper tone with the Belanger's and a little cooler around the door sill.

I deleted my mufflers this weekend. I have Hiflows with Arrow PCM. Due to weather I only took it around the neighborhood up to 40mph, but it sounded fantastic. I plan on taking it out tonight and banging few gears for the full affect. Wasn't too "droney" to me. It was a simple DIY....no muffler shop needed. Cost less than $50 total, it's lighter and sounds better/louder than the pricey muffler systems.

If it interest you I can try and do some videos tonight.

I have HF Bel cats + Corsa is louder than Belanger to me. I do like the way both sound and switch them every 3 months. It is so freaking awesome loud at WOT with the Corsa... love it. Belanger more refined/euro sound is sweet too. Wish I had something in the middle...if Bel's were louder, I'd probably leave them. Buy both!

Here are some videos to help. Make sure you have good speakers

    Stock exhaust flyby:

Inside car with full Belangers with cats @ 50 mph in 6th gear

Inside car with full Belangers with cats WOT

Outside car IDLE and WOT full Belangers

As you can hear.... very very deep and throaty sound. The sound is WICKED at redline.

Corsa and Belanger are going neck and neck here.

AHR headers one would think I would go with ARH mufflers to make a complete system but I have been told the ARH are probably the quietest mufflers on that list. Is that true? I don't want quiet lol.

Everyone should do a $50 muffler delete before investing the money in these systems. Best performance upgrade (lightest) and I promise you it sounds great with no droning. It's a little louder than stock... but your neighbors won't be pissed.

    TRY IT!

I am contemplating this. Is there a write up somewhere of header install along with everything that needs to be done to prevent melting damage from heat?

    ********UPDATED....Nevermind....found ViperPete's

Well I may experiment with that setup fairly soon.

    Yes...ViperPete did an awesome thread - http://driveviper.com/forums/threads...hoto-intensive

I didn't use the sleeves like he used I just used the DEI tape around the heater tubes so I didn't have to open up the cooling system. And I routed my O2 wires a tad different but for the most part his write up will help the home do it yourselfer a lot.

I have ARH headers w hi flo cats/ Swain Tech Coated (Ceramic) and factory exhaust and LOVE em. I didn't see the need in spending dollars for exhaust as the engine note will not change, it is not a V8 or V10 with a flat plane crank....JM2C

So I had a little extra time at work to take a look at this. I took the passenger side door sill off fully expecting to see something hitting and I found nothing. Everything had plenty of room and the vibration is still there with the door sill off.

I just hit 5k miles last night and I think it needs a motor mount. I put my screw driver on the passenger side motor mount and I can hear it loud and clear. I put my screw driver on the frame right next to the mount and hear nothing. So I started thinking maybe the header is hitting the motor mount. I put my screw driver and put it on the header and again here nothing. Even used a pry bar to move the header around. No change.

I doubt a mount would be bad at 5k miles but I assume anything is possible.

*yes the motor mount is tight....that was my first thought that maybe I forgot to tighten it down.

Mine too has a very annoying rattle at idle only. 100rpm above idle and it goes away. Sounds like metal to plastic or plastic to plastic. definitely inside the sill .... i hope...
