    1992 and 1993 Viper

I have searched on here as well as the web but can't seem to get any good details.

What are the big differences in the 1992 and 1993. I know the production went up to 1043 for 1993. I see lots of 93's with the rear antenna but when did that stop for the 1993's. Were those "left overs" the exact same build as the 1992's? Still AC as standard until 94? The interior seems the exact same as well as the "yellow" on the Temp gauge.

Thanks go all you Gen I experts.

If you are shopping go for the 1992 for the collectible potential alone.

Outside of that I have no clue!

I have a 1992, but was looking at some of the 1993's with the antenna and just wondered how different were they. Why the carry over and what other parts are same/different.

I think the first 500 1993 cars had the antenna on the fender

92' will not say " objects are closer than they appear" on the passenger mirror. Hood release is also different. My mounting point on my 92' for the screws on the side windows is different but I have seen some other 92's different than mine. Car cover is different on the 92 and it has not pocket for mirror.

Battery in 1992 is under a removable hatch in the floor of the trunk...1993 moved it to needing to remove the rear wheel to change the battery. 1992 is more convenient, 1993 might be safer? To trickle charge doesn't matter because there is a trickle battery charger hookup under the hood anyways.

I think the headlights had a slight difference. I seem to recall someone here mentioning about snaps in the removable rear sport bar window.

Approx 300 antenna 1993 Vipers were built. At approx 04/04/93 following changes occurred:
Rear antenna replaced by windshield antenna wire
Battery relocated to left rear fender
Front caliper lettering changed from "VIPER" to "RT/10"
    Reverse lockout added to transmission
Top Material Changed from Vinyl to Cloth

My first Viper was a '93 and it was a blast - but the windows and toupee top were a PIA in the Midwest weather. Still miss that beautiful one piece hood!

Was very fortunate to buy a 92 about a year and a half ago. Absolutely love it.

93' moved the battery when the antenna changed. So some 93's still have the battery below the trunk.

No yellow zone on the later 93's water temp gauge

Battery moved from boot sorry trunk to wheel arch

Indent in rear fender for fuel cap rather than in the cap itself

My car is an early model 93. Although I have two working seatbelts... i have noticed an extra seatbelt tucked under my seat. Nicely folded.. have no idea why!
I can take a video if you guys are curious?

Since the seat belts are in the doors, the extra lap belt is to install a car seat.

The spare belt is in all gen 1's. It worked great for our child seat.

Did they remove those for the Gen 2? I thought they were in them as well but my car doesn't have one. Was hoping to use it for my daughters booster seat.

I just use the regular belts for my kids booster seats. They work just fine. Although I do have to put a small cushion under the booster seat so it sits properly. If the shoulder belt is too high on them, I tuck it under the arm rest on the booster seat.

The 1992 is a very unique and differs from the 1993 in many ways.

    Hood and hood latches differ
    Engine is painted "Gloss red"
Fuel system is built with a regulator and return line from the intake (but not used)
Bellypan has 10mm bolts, not 15mm
Rear window snaps do not work
    No reverse lockout on transmission
Objects seem closer on driver mirror
    indent for gas cap

And, my favorite is that "curious" 92 and early 93 cooling system. What a joy (NOT) to service !!!

  22. #22
I agree with the above... took me a few hrs to bleed the coolant system on the last 93 I did and overhaul on...

More useless trivia, and Dan likely has better detail. The first handful of 92s were throwing oil. The factory came out to Bob's house and took his car back to the factory. They replaced the engine but it has no VIN on the VIN plate. (I think the idea was to put the 00002 number back on). Bob sold the original engine to an "engine collector" in California. I tracked the guy down and have the engine in a crate in my garage next to the car.

Might have been more than the first handful using oil as I changed out the rings in my '93 carryover when I was doing the head gaskets as it was also using oil. Something about the rings used if I remember correctly. Still have a set of home-made dog bones somewhere that I used to keep the liners in place.
