Thread: Battery tender

    Battery tender

First time storing a Gen 3 so I want to clarify what I'm about to do.

I use a battery maintainer on all my stuff during the winter. I found the POS post under the hood but no real GRD?? Will I be ok to just ground to an engine bolt etc?

Just don't want to cause any electrical issues with the PCM etc.

I use the power socket in the arm rest compartment. No issues over many years.

From page 161 of the 2006 Viper SRT Owners Manual: "...the ground (on the ear of the Thermostat Housing) of your Viper as shown."

Amazing stuff in Owners Manual !!

On a serious note, this is the ground that I use for tenders, chargers on our Gen III, IV, and V Vipers.

If u have a pig tail just connect straight to the battery and it comes out by the rear diffuser and connect it to the tender.. thats what I do.

DSE (a sponsor here) makes a great quick release battery cover system equipped with a pigtail for charging.

$250 DSE-VP-BA-002: SRT-10 Quick Release Battery Cover + Charger Connector

A high quality, quick release replacement for the cumbersome OEM Battery Cover with option for Battery Charge Connector

Compatible with all battery chargers. Contact DSE with charger model number for connection / adapter information.

Direct connection to Deltran Battery Tender; Optima Digital 400. Adapt to CTEK with 56-564 Comfort Indicator Pigtail

Yep, just wire in a pigtail to the battery and you are done. No need to spend a bunch of money on that. Love the CTEK, good tech, not your dad's charger.

The major benefit, for me, of the DSE product is the quick-release fastners on the battery cover. You get a new cover with the quick-release fastners, as well as the harness and a solid plug-in point in the rear bumper. Once installed, it is very easy to reach in there and plug in my Battery Tender.

Do you need access to the battery through the cover a lot? Even then, a shorter bolt or machine screw fixes the issue with the OE and tremendously long torx head bolts.

My CTEK 3500 died after the third use. Bought it because of the recommendations/opinions of others. Maybe I was just unlucky, but so disgusted I returned it and bought a generic brand smart charger that has been working flawlessly for a year. Pigtail in the rear diffuser.

Nope, practicaly never. But if I had a short at the battery and needed to get in there quickly, the DSE cover would seem like a very cheap investment.

I purchased the DSE battery cover with the battery tender connection. The 1/4 to 1/2 turn quick disconnect is what I want. I would agree that shorter screws would be better than the long factory screws. But I figure if I ever need to get to the battery quickly, immediately is not fast enough. I like Dougs cover and have bought numerous Gen IV products from him. His stuff is 1st class.

I remove the battery completely and bring it down to basement. It's a good to time to clean it up and then I hook it up to tender. It's cold here in Michigan and batteries in cold temperatures only do worse than at room temperatures.

I use a Pulsetech Xtreme maintenance charger. It's connected whenever the car is in the garage. The Pulsetech also came with a quick connect harness that could be permanently connected to the battery, which I did and fed it out the back through the diffuser vanes.

Here is how I attached mine, I routed mine through the front bumper. Because I can see it before entering the car, I won't forget to unplug it.
