    Viper Orders Reopening

Dodge Viper ordering expected to reopen by year’s end

Los Angeles — Ordering for the last production year of the Dodge Viper is expected to reopen by the end of the year, according to company officials.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, which produces the car, closed all Viper ordering earlier this year to assess how many cars they’ll be able to build for the supercar’s final year of production. All Viper ordering was closed Oct. 7. Ordering for the top-of-the-line ACR model closed Sept. 27.

Dodge boss Tim Kuniskis, head of Fiat Chrysler-North America passenger-car brands, said part of the problem was the company had to learn how many more orders some of its suppliers could fulfill by the end of model-year production, which is expected to be mid-2017.

“We actually had to shut down the ordering because we outran our headlights,” he told The Detroit News this month on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Auto Show. “We didn’t know if we were going to have enough parts to build all the cars that people ordered.”

The company also has experienced a shortage of its custom-built carbon-fiber “extreme aero wings” for its track-capable ACR models, which has caused “a bunch” of Vipers to sit stagnant in Detroit while they wait for the parts.

“The demand for ACR is off the charts — way more than we ever expected,” Kuniskis said. “We are close to opening it back up now that we know how many more we can build.

    “They will sell out quickly.”

Many of the final orders came from Gerry Wood Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Salisbury, North Carolina. The dealership ordered 135 Vipers. The dealership even created three of its own special editions through Dodge’s “One-of-One” customization program.

Kuniskis said despite demand for the roughly $90,000-$121,000 vehicle, production at Conner Avenue Assembly Plant will not continue into the 2018 model year. “It was last call, now it’s really last call,” he said.

Fiat Chrysler declined to say how many Vipers are expected to be produced or were produced for the 2016. Production for the model year started in the third quarter of 2015 and is believed to have ended this summer when model-year 2017 production began.

From September 2015 through last month, Viper sales totaled about 670 cars in the United States, including 447 cars this year. Those figures do not include Canada, where sales during the first nine months of this year have totaled fewer than 50 cars.

Since 1992, the company has built approximately 30,000 Vipers at the Mack Avenue Assembly (1992-1994) and Conner Avenue Assembly Plant (1995-current), both in Detroit.

It'll be interesting to see if all the people who said they couldn't order a Viper because FCA closed the ordering banks will get their cars.

Interesting no word of Conner being sold... just production ending. Retooling for Gen VI maybe?

Agreed. I want to order a GTC ACR still. The window was too short.

There were more than 50 Canadian sold orders made.

Why open our window back up when there are outstanding orders?

The ordering window was only 10 days until it was abruptly closed. This was back in April(I think)

Soo Gerry Woods purchase of all those vipers was for null now?

Also, something tells me to be cautious on build QC for most of vipers sold after reopening. Surely, most of the talent from Conner is looking elsewhere to advance their careers rather than waiting until the doors closed.

It is ordering reopening not the plant reopening.

Well, this is good news especially for all of the buyers that were ready to order when ordering closed. It should sell out within hours of re-opening.

Same here. I have a car configured and my deposit...I was just waiting for FCA to complete the surrender of my lemoned 13 GTS.

Fingers crossed Gerry Wood doesn't have a line of "special editions" waiting to be submitted once the order banks open again.

I think we have something like 2,300 orders waiting to be placed, all for export to UAE.

Just having a little fun with the not-so-silent minority.
I believe we will see a short and limited run of orders, most of which will fill those sales that are pending at Dodge dealerships with customer sold-order deposits behind them, to keep those who have been upset by the sudden demand and had missed out.
Those who love to complain for the sake of it and just to be heard, unfortunately, this will not quite them. They'll search out and find something else to whine about.

I am new to this forum and never posted. I have a 13 GTS as well and I'm curious to know why your car was lemoned. Thanks, sorry for the thread jack. Feel free to PM me if you like.

You should ask what wasn't wrong with it, it'll be a shorter reply. He had a demon possessed build, real shame, but it happens. There a few buy backs here and there, usually engine, electrical, diffs, etc.

LOL Dman. Ain't that the damn truth. Like you, I was shopping around for an alternative when the order banks closed. The MP4 started to grow on me, but now that there is a chance I can do a 1 of 1 still, I think that I there isn't a car in this price range that will satiate me the way a 1 of 1 GTC would.

Like I said, fingers crossed it's true and that those of us that had an order ready can get ours in before the GW special edition run #2 clogs it all up again.
