    Buying my first viper

Hello everyone my name is Dave im 28 years old. Im looking to buy my first viper this upcoming spring. I would like to find a second gen or even a third gen viper. i joined the forums so i can ask questions and find information. Now im split between the a r/t10 with the removable hard top and a gts coupe. Most of the prices im looking at are between 30k and 45k. Are these good prices for the second and third gen cars. Im not worried about needing to build a engine or transmission. I have build both before when i worked at a speed shop. What im worried about is the electrical and the suspension. I also plan on racing the car street, strip, and road course. Ill list all my questions below and thanks so much for any info you guys give. also sorry for spelling and grammar.

    1)Whats a good price for a 2nd and 3rd gen?
2)how much power can the engine with stand before i have to forge the internals?
3)I plan on drag racing and a little road racing the car along with street driving. will the viper hold up?
4)What mods should i make asap?
5)What are the biggest problems that plague the viper?

    Ok, I'll start:
buy a salvaged one then based upon what you want to do with it, probably be in the 25-30k range (or less)

The biggest problem I find with the Viper is how often they get wrecked on the street. But there are many of them out there to get your hands on if you're willing to spend some coin.

I know it's absolutely none of my business, but PLEASE do not street race in this car if you get one...leave that garbage to the beat up Fox bodies and pickup trucks.

Go to the track, and learn to perfect it. I found there is no shortage of events or people willing to lend some advice out there. And you (hopefully) won't get arrested or wrecked and make us all look like idiots.

    Good luck in your search.

I agree. If you are interested in what "mods you should make ASAP" subscribe to my youtube channel (boosted2k). I've been covering the basics and will be posting more (another video this weekend).

"Before you forge the internals." Just get a 96-99 and it will have forged internals already. Generally forced indiction is where you see people really wanting the forged Pistons. Up to that you are probably fine.

It's cheaper to find one with some mods already than do it yourself but if that's your thing, then cool. Just know it's not the cheapest way to go. If you really don't mind rebuilding engines and transmissions it sounds like you would be ok with a salvage title car. These cars get totalled pretty quickly because of the hood. Do your research and you may find one that wasn't as destroyed as it sounds.

Coilovers start at 1 grand and go up from there. Are you gonna live on the track? If so then a good set is worth it.

That's a start, but you can never do too much homework before you buy.

    Good luck.

I know a few of us has YouTube channels that features different topics... I have a Gen 2 and in my videos I talk about different topics from picking the right Viper to ownership experience. See the video below....

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKpemijOnCY

There are a lot of people that street race their Vipers however it is looked down at on these boards. However you are an adult and understand what happens if you kill or injured someone else..... So just keep that in mind because the does not have traction control if something should go wrong to help save it.... News articles about every 6months of someone being killed in their Vipers due to high speeds...

But watch the videos and if you want any other questions let me or anyone else know and we all will answer them for you.
