Half Shafts

Being a newer owner of an 08 I have read that the 08 half shafts are weak. Is this something that I should really consider replacing prior to doing any 1/4 mile runs? I see some on partsrack but I'm kind of confused as they are under the GenIII/IV section but they say they are GenI/II? Has anyone with an 08 had issues with their stock ones?

Replied to PM, thanks. As to the second response... I like to try and avoid down time if possible. Broken pieces at the track make for unhappy days.

Well if you are truly serious about that. I went out and bought some Mark Williams axles they are about $5400 for the set.

You know it really didn't seem like that much, after the 2 x $7800 transmissions and the 2 x $4000 rear ends. And after I got tired of breaking all that crap I then spent the money to go TH400.

So in all seriousness, if you are just doing some weekend drag racing, just use the stock ones until they break.

BTW, my car has 1750 HP.

Damn!!! I was just concerned as I had been informed that the 08's were the only year of the GenIV that had the weaker shafts.

The shafts were hollow only on the early 2008's. If your SSG is from the first production run of Green then you have the hollow ones.

I want to say I have a January build date but I would have to check to be sure. Can you define "early"?

You could just grab a set of used 09-10 halfshafts and have the peace of mind

I remember reading the change happening in April 08. Not sure.

It was only necessary due to the ACR so I wouldn't worry about them in your case.

Hmm, not sure of the build date, but mine held up fine with 600whp and launching at 5k rpm with drag radials.

Which brings me to another question, I heard the 08's are a nightmare to get the shafts out for changing gears and this was also rectified for 09 & 10, is there truth to this? Negative. Consider changing the transmission 5th & 6th ratios instead.

Tap yours with a small metal tool...see if they sound hollow or solid.

The half shafts come out of the car just fine. It's the stub axles that go into the diff that create the problem. Most of the 08's had square snap (meaning the wire used to make the round rings was square instead of round) rings in the stub axles where they go into the diff. The very late 08's thru 10's had round snap rings so you stood half a chance of get the stub axles out of the diff.

I believe we spoke about this when we were up in Tamworth at the track. I would also like to do the 5th and 6th gear change as well but that doesn't help me 1st-4th.

Well, the passenger side stub axle sheared off on my '08 converted ACR X last June at Texas World Speedway causing me to spin and slam into a concrete wall backwards at about 70 mph and broke my right arm as it bounced off the hard side of my race seat. Another lesson from the school of hard knocks . . . the net is there for a reason! Point of this is I also have an '08 roadster and have replaced both in that car rather than be uneasy as I drive her.

The hollow half shaft will have a smooth surface the length of the shaft between the CV joints. The solid shaft will have two raised lips on the shaft between the joints. They will be a few inchs apart from each other.

The hollow half shaft will have a smooth surface the length of the shaft between the CV joints. The solid shaft will have two raised lips on the shaft between the joints. They will be a few inchs apart from each other.

Thank you very much for this info! Does anyone know the HP rating or whatever other type of rating there would be between the early hollow shafts versus the solid?
