    Sudden 2nd Gear Whining

Hey everyone. Had the car at the dragstrip on Sunday and it ran great. Drove it home from the track and then drove it Mon/Tues as well. This morning I took it to a meeting and on the way home I noticed a high pitched whine in 2nd gear and when idling with the clutch out it sounds a bit rougher than normal. I wasn't even pushing the car at all today... When I push the clutch in, there isn't any sound. I tried to take a few clips of the noise... am I crazy or does something sound not right?

    Idling:

2nd Gear (starts about 0:22 into the clip)

With the clutch out in neutral they all sound like the trans is full of marbles.

Yeah, my main concern is how 2nd gear sounds with the high pitched whining that just started. Doesn't do it in any other gear and didn't used to make the noise before last Wednesday afternoon. Heading to a trans shop tomorrow to get it checked out... Fingers crossed.

Did you check the level at all? Hopefully not something drastic. Agree with slowhatch, the dual clutch is loud stock or aftermarket.

Haven't checked the level at all... will need to do that though.

I've got a Mcleod RXT twin disc installed now. That one doesn't sound as "marbles" as the stock, but still has some noise, but it changed at the same time the whining in 2nd gear started.

Well... shop got the trans pulled last week and opened it up. Said 2nd gear was pitted pretty bad and 3rd gear wasn't too far behind it. Said the whining was from a broken snap ring. So needless to say I'm getting a rebuild and a few new gears. Doh! Parts were in yesterday and I'll be picking it up on Friday. Just in time to go into storage for the winter. Damnit!!!! Oh well... at least it'll be ready to go for Spring.

Any pictures of the bad gears ?
Pitting of the gear teeth is not very common, what oil are you using ?

Not certain what oil was used as I haven't flushed it since getting the car. Here are the pics he sent me of the gears... Not the best since they were from TXT.

Thanks for the pictures, the gear teeth in the lower picture do not look too bad. The upper gear appears to have heavy wear, did they look over the corresponding cluster gear for equal wear ?
If you are using the factory fill ATF I would recommend a different fluid.

The upper gear is 2nd, which my guy said wasn't looking good and the lower is 3rd which he said was "marginal". No sense in leaving 3rd alone when it's torn down. Also said the lower shaft of gears (not sure exactly what it's called, but the lower shaft that has the smaller gears on it... is that the cluster gear?) was worn similar to the uppers so replacing that too. Crappy thing is that you can't replace just the necessary gears on that, and the entire shaft needs to be replaced which alone was $700 from Tremec. Ouch.

What fluid would you recommend? Previous owner did a lot of track racing, but I'm mainly street with the occasional trip to the drag strip if that makes any difference...

LOL! After reading the woes some of the Gen5 guys are having with issues and non-coverage, not sure I get the award... maybe runner up. LOL! Definitely sucks, but at least I caught this early. All I needed was another trip to the drag strip and some hard shifts and nuking the entire trans. Then I'd really be up shit creek. Either way this hopefully gets the car nice and sorted out and I can just enjoy it all next season.

I'd be interested in a alternative fluid as well As long as the info can be shared.

LOL! That's true... I wasn't able to get much traction the last time at the track and was granny shifting, but was able to hit 11.4@126.88mph on the motor. There is definitely more in it, but not too bad for only about 8 passes on the car. On the nitrous, I'm still working out the bugs on that... spray was hitting in 1st and 2nd but wouldn't fire in 3rd so it fell on it's face. Did a 10.9 with spraying in 1st and 2nd, but MPH was about the same. I'm confident this thing will hit low 10's on the spray once I get this last piece sorted out. Next season should be fun. :-)

I had a problem with mine where it would be hard to get into reverse. Car has 28k on it. Thank god for fidelity warranty. Costing me $100 plus clutch. $1100.
