Both sad and tragic. Another good reason for Track Days.

Amazing how the "neighbors" were able to calibrate the speed on the fly like that.

Wow, I've never seen a block thrown out of a car like that. Hopefully they recover.

I think there engine weight estimate of 1300 lbs was a little high.

I'd say the engine numbers are crazy high but the speed numbers are likely not high. These cars are amazingly stout, that destruction didn't happen in a low speed crash. Hopefully the driver and passenger get out of that without serious physical consequences. I think we've all done "stupid", some more than others, and some with these kind of consequences. This kind of stuff just reminds me of how lucky I have been, I did some pretty insane shit when I was younger, thank god nothing like this ever happened.

Looks like the engine was lacking oil! if the engine mounts were worn that would help answer why it broke free, but the ripping apart of the bellhousing is something! Amazed they survived!

Jesus, that is a violent crash. I bet that was a crazy sight to see. Unfortunate, but this is what you get when you act recklessly. Hopefully they will be ok.

    Some more info:
The Sheboygan County Emergency Dispatch Center received a call at about 1:50 p.m. of a one-car crash on County Road SS east of State 28. A 56-year-old man and a 61-year-old man, both from Beaver Dam, were driving a 2001 Dodge Viper east on County Road SS at speeds over 100 mph when the 56-year-old driver veered off the road to the left and struck a culvert, according to the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Office. The car went airborne into a tree line, striking about two trees before coming to a rest.

Both men received life-threatening injuries. The 61-year-old man had to be extracted from the vehicle with the Jaws of Life. Theda Star medical helicopters took the men to the hospital.

The crash is still under investigation and pending formal charges, but alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Wow, definitely looks like it had a pretty violent last few moments. Ripping the bell housing out and throwing a block like that means, most likely, the forces acting on that vehicle had to be intense and in all different angles. I do wish them a quick recovery.

I think because for your average person, 100mph is a dividing line between just kinda speeding and attempting to go supersonic. Most avg passenger cars have a governor at 95 or 100, and even in AZ where the speed limit is 75 or,Texas where it is 85 in places, 100mph is a psychological barrier for people. So that's why they tend to go right there when asked how fast someone was going or had to have been going. I don't think they meant anything by it. And also, traumatic events can make you think you saw things that you didn't. They may have only heard it and saw it already at a stand still but their mind may tell them they saw the wreck happen. It's just one of those kooky things the brain does.

Bottom line, I don't think they meant to come off like some kind of crash expert. And judging by the carnage doesn't exactly tell you how fast they were going. Speed isn't what really matters but the delta. Going from 65 to zero in one hundredth of a second is very different than going from 100 to zero in 30 seconds. So without a metric like tire marks with their friction quotient tested, it's tough to say exactly how fast just based on the car being torn up. One thing I can say is it had to be pretty tough on their bodies and I hope they are ok.

G2 Engine 567 lbs... in fact TV calls it a 'lightweight' engine vs a G 1

Weather getting colder...tires getting older....alcohol muddies the reaction times. Sad

Really sad. Hope they are alright. Lucky to be alive. BUT... very irresponsible to drive like that... where there are houses nearby.

Wonder what the condition of the tires was? Seems like these cars either have good rubber or shit tires that are old. I looked at one on a dealer lot last year, car had 10000 or so miles on it. And, original tires. No wonder people crash them.

Exactly.....what the hell am I missing here? It is pretty obvious that the driver was driving way too fast for the roads and obviously his talent level. By the looks of the damage, he may have been going over 100 mph. Sorry to be harsh, but I get tired of people claiming "old tires", "cold temps", etc. The reality is he could have had a set of Prius tires on the car and driven the speed limit and would have been fine and not lost control of the car. If he had wrecked doing the speed limit, he might have walked away if wearing his seat belt.

It is very sad these people are suffering, but this was due to the neglect of the driver, plain and simple. Trying to justify if it was tires, temperatures, etc does not answer why he was driving that fast. It doesn't matter if driving a mini van or a Viper, you go that fast on public roads it is only a matter of time before you end up on the news. Add alcohol to the mix and good judgement takes as big of a shit as your reaction times.

Do we know for sure he was drinking? Obviously that is never a good idea with any car, especially a high performance car.

And yes it is pretty clear he was speeding, with houses around the limit couldn't have been very high. 45 tops, I would think. But just looking at the pictures I have no way of telling how fast he was going. As I said though, only doing 60 is pretty bad if you hit an immovable object. Temperatures aren't that cold yet. Old tires may have not helped anything (if that is indeed the case) but obviously the choices one makes as a driver are the biggest factor.

My heart goes out to those affected. Family and friends hurt too when you get in a wreck. Sometimes we forget that. A lot of sadness here, and it looks like sadness that was preventable. We all make mistakes though. Most of the time we get away with it, sometimes not. Thoughts and prayers go out to all those hurting because of this.

Anybody have any more updates on this terrible tragedy? I can't imagine what's going thru the survivors mind, considering this was most likely a good friend of his & now knowing he's deceased & he's paralyzed & alcohol was also involved. Does anyone know which one was driving (the survivor or the deceased one). Especially at their ages, you would have thought they would have had a lil' more sense.

The moral of this story is, do not speed on public roads. Luckily, that is a VERY rare occurrence with Viper owners.

Exactly right. We've all done stupid things, but most likely in our younger years. As adults, they know better as this is exactly what track days are for. This is tragic, but it could have been worse as they could have killed other people which is inexcusable. Prayers for their families.....
