OEM spark plug wire confusion for 96 GTS

Too long, don't want to read: I just need a correct set of OEM Mopar spark plug wires for a 96 GTS. Suppressed, correct length and preferably numbered.

I am running into a bit of confusion regarding OEM spark plug wires. I am replacing the OEM Mopar ones (numbered, suppressed and correct length) and I am finding two different part numbers.

On one of the online viper stores they have a set for the RT/10 only, part number 4798736AB. They state that the ones for the GTS are 04883365AA, but they seem to be out of stock, as that page is a 404.

So, I went up to the dodge dealer and asked for the GTS set, specifically. They came back with the 4798736AB. I mentioned these were supposedly for the RT/10 according to a viper parts dealer, but the dodge dealer said that was the only part number they had for all of the models in 96. I didn't order them, since they are a special order part and carry a 15% restocking fee.

There is about a $30 difference between these two sets, so something must be different, but I don't know which part number is correct.

Before all of this, I took a roll of the dice with a Denso set from Rockauto, but some of the wires were about 6-8" too long. I figured I would be safe with a Denso set (heck, it has the Chrysler symbol on them), but maybe those were the RT/10 ones? Rockauto didn't break anything down into RT/10 or GTS. Those unfortunately have to be returned.

I did originally go with those for about half a minute, but I am going back to 100% stock items. I'll have those, a woodhouse transmission mount that was barely used and a oil catch can for sale to those who are interested.

Looking ahead to future collectability, I would make every effort to find some with the correct date code. Parts book shows same part numbers for GTS and RT10.

Agree. Some buyers will be super picky in the future regarding these things. I wouldn't mind, but some do. So no difference in wires between the GTS and RT/10 for 96-02, eh?

Hardly the best. They burn up and break off at the plug. They look pretty but I was blown away by how miserably they failed. Switched to all ceramic wires. Your new best unless you like the inferior brand.

There is a difference in lengths for some of the plug wires between a 96 gts and RT. Remember the 96 RT engine was still a Gen1 engine. I went through this when I ordered new oem spark plug wires, the dealer ordered the ones for the RT. When ordering next time just go with the 1997 part numbers .

Excellent idea, thanks. I will just do that from now on. Crazy that Dodge themselves doesn't have it straight for the 96 models.

Yes, I ordered the factory Mopar wires for my 96 GTS. They are numbered but I had to swap around 2 of the wires because they were not the correct lengths. Not sure if the were stamped wrong or were for a R/T. Got a feeling like the comment above that the 97 & up would be correct. Also, the coil packs for the 96 GTS is an odd one to. A one year only electrical connection that are discontinued.You have to switch to pigtails to a 97 & up and go with the later model coil packs.

Assuming this is on cars with headers and the heat shields removed? I don't think I've seen that talked about on any cars with stock manifolds and I also don't recall to many complaints about them in the community. Says they offer a lifetime warranty, did they not stand behind that?

This is frequently what I've done. The service manual and parts manuals have lots of misprints.

So I have a set of new original 96 GTS wires still in the original package that I have not used yet (still have the original wires on my car) I Purchased them for the reason you mentioned. I can pull them out of storage and send the part number if interested...

MH60M- I read from 98% percent of the community that the quality wires are the ones to go for. I get where Dave is coming from, especially if the wires are open to a great amount of aftermarket caused heat. He also could have easily received a bad batch, like with any part manufacturer out there. But with stock applications, I see rave reviews on all of the viper forums. If you are interested in the ones I have, feel free to PM me. I will let them go at a great price.
