    Getting a new rear diff

Thank goodness for warranty. Rear diff started making some whistling/whining noises at 55+ mph. Took it to the dealership and had a Viper tech drive it. He agreed it was too loud to be normal. They said a new diff should arrive by next week. As of this post my car has 5800 miles.

Side story: On the way to the dealership a newer mustang GT passed me going quite a bit over the speed limit. About 2 miles later I see him stuck in traffic with blue smoke coming out of the front. As I drove past I could now see his whole front end is smashed in. He was the last car in line and didn't seem to notice that cars were backed up on the freeway exit. OOps.

Several of us have had our diffs replaced for this very reason. No issues at all with getting mine done under warranty. This is one area where FCA seems not to fight. Have your tech check the fluid level on the new diff. My tech said the new one was low on fluid, and he had to top it off, new out of the box from Dana.

It would be a shame for an Arrow tune to cause too much pressure build up in the rear differential housing which results in whining and grinding..

Who knows.. maybe the same dumpster that machined the blocks were involved with the rear end...

FCA will soon claim that as they did when more than 5% of the engines started to fail.

iv had 5 new vipers, a new challenger and never have had a diff fail, just remember if you do not break your diff in right, hard acceleration from stops and spinning the rear wheels will trash your diff in 10 seconds, loosen it up for it to make noise

Had my nice and quiet factory rear diff replaced by dodge with one that makes even more noise. Going to go in and ask them to come with me on a drive and see if they are willing to try it again.

Comes as a sealed unit, maybe that's why. My tech always checks before he installs. New diff seems OK, I don't do anything stupid with the car. It is much quieter than the first one. At speeds over 70, in 6th, I can hear a little something, but have to really listen. Nothing under 70 or over 80. Also much smoother, old diff was a little clunky at times at low speed.

Not sure what is going on with QC at Dana. Some of these are awful, some quiet, some in-between. Challenger guys complain too, but they have Getrags I think.

Donk, why did they replace the original if not making noise? Was this one the 16s under recall?

Yes exactly. SRT called me and told me to bring it in for a swap. The rear end wasn't making noise but then it only had 300-400kms on it.
I'm at 1100kms now and the replacement lets me know it's there in 6th on the hwy. it's almost downed out by the window wind noise though... Haha!

That's were most of us noticed the noise - 6th gear on the highway. Some more than others. My first I was OK with, it was more the clunkiness. Second is much better, but as I said, still a liiitttl something. Have to really listen above all the other noise, but overall much quieter. IMO, these Dana diffs may sing a little, but should barely noticeable, if at all. Way too many on this forum have complained (and had replaced) noisy rear ends.

Take it back and see what they say.

My second diff is starting to make the same noise as the first one after about 2000 miles, I told them I'll drive it till it gets worst cause summer is almost over, but now my car is down with motor problems

Just had my '14 GTS in to replace a failed O2 Sensor and had them check the differential to make sure it was fine. My car has 7,650 mi. on it. They said it was fine and I had them change oil, filter, brake fluid and differential fluid. I think of it as safe insurance.
