Is the switch from GEN III to GEN IV worth it? Thoughts

I have an 03 vert that im trading in on an 08 SSG Coupe to you think the benefit is there in doing the trade in for the new one? I do like the hard top but this whole thing will cost me about 60K

What do you guys think if you traded your GEN III ARE YOU GLAD YOU DID?

Is it worth it? Hell yes. Sheet metal non-withstanding, the gen 4 is damn near a new car in comparison with a gen 3. Completely new motor, suspension, brakes, transmission, rear end, etc.

Now, the 60k part; what's going on there? Even if they tossed you 30-35k for your 03 vert on trade in, you shouldn't have to come out any more than another 30-35k to put yourself into a 08 coupe.

What he said, and from somone that went from an 03 Vert to a gen IV ACR I can tell you, yes it was definitely worth it.

So it's a 35k difference. That makes more sense.

+ state tax...and he stills has the 19K he owes

If your getting 42500 for a trade in...wow..thts really good money. I would go for it for sure. Now, 76 for the SSG 08...hmmm a little high there if you ask me but, they are giving you a few thousand more for yours and adding a few on theirs. dealers draw. They know what their doing.

good deal overall though. A Gen 4 is a totally different car other than looks.

Brakes and suspension are the same on the Gen III and Gen IV. The upgrade is engine, trans, and rear.

Never had a Gen III, but I kinda want one LOL.
For me the price of the Gen III coupes to Gen IV was so small that I felt it worth the extra $$ to get a Gen IV right of the bat.
Now if I could have got a Gen III coupe for $40k that is a different story.

IMO 60k$ to trade from a Gen III to regular IV coupe is nuts! :O

Almost any Gen III is worth 35k+ Even if you sold yours outright firesale for $35k, you can find Gen IV coupes all day long in the 60's even in the 50's if you wait..
Now if you are talking Gen IV ACRs, they can be had in 70's to 80's I sill don't know how you are coming up with a $60k difference.

Vert to coupe is worth it, Gen 4 just makes it bonus points. SSG has good resale also.

He owes that 19k regardless so it's a 33,500 price difference + tax. to get a Gen IV. To say its a 60k step up is not accurate.

    Exactly !!

So he either keeps the Gen 3 and owes 19K or, trades it and gets the 08 and owes 56K.....+tax

Keep in mind the Gen 3 is pretty well bottomed out and the Gen 4 still has some depreciation coming.

The only thing that is not exactly correct is that Gen IIIs have bottomed out and the premise that Gen IVs will also be doing that. One of the realities is that Dealers are paying more for both
of these Generations than they did in the past 1 -1.5 years. The real proof is not what any of us may say, it is the distinct fact that the Banks will loan more on said cars than in recent history.

Have seen this happen in the past, but one has to realize with regulations still very strict the only reason a Bank will loan more ( especially if the product is aging ) is if the value is stable or
increasing. Not to say it has gone up much ( it hasn't ) but it is definitely a change in direction. We do not buy at the Auctions, but as another reference the values have been slightly up there
also for above average cars --I am assuming Viper owners are not really that concerned with below average machines?!

Ouch! I have thought about Gen 4, but my 03 is worth mid-30s on a good day, so it would be my car + 30K, not worth it to me. I can't use 510 hp, let alone 600! I can't justify it (even more so, because I'm buying a new house, and don't have the extra cash at the moment anyway). I know the Gen 4 is more than HP (diff, tranmission. gearing). The only way I could do this (and I have thought about it) is that both the 03, AND my 07 Charger SRT8 would have to go, and I like the SRT8 too much for that. However, I would only be insuring and maintaining 1 car instead of two, but it would take a while to break even. I guess my point is, you can ask for our advice, but can only do what you feel comfortable with.

I would rather have a Gen3 coupe than a Gen4. I love my Gen3, for the money you are thinking of spending you could modify your gen3 and have way more car than a stock gen4. Just my .02....

Money is almost always the deciding factor vs. the "want factor" for me.... I have only owned a 09 Gen IV, but we bought it for 60K and it had 4,800 miles on it and spent most of it's life in a bubble in WY. Have you thought about selling your car, then going in with cash?

Gen 4 is a great car. He will be going from 20K to 50k what he owes on a toy. Gen 3 is a great car too. Borrow the same 30K and go buy a rental house that makes sense. You may make enough to buy a Gen 6 clear title.

That is what I did before buying a Viper, delayed the purchase a year and glad I did

Had 2 Gen 3s and 3 Gen 4s. I guess my talent level is pretty low, but I never saw a huge difference.

I had a gen3 then I drove a gen4 night and day difference. I bought a gen4 and am very happy, if you can get a gen 4

I'd rather keep the Gen III viper and put the $30k towards a Lotus, Noble, GT500, Shelby Cobra etc., but that's just me.

I have gone from a Gen3 to 4. There is a huge difference in power. Obviously It isn't apples to apples since I went from a Gen3 Coupe to a Gen4 ACR. For track experience I do notice the factory controller delay with the throttle bodies. Mopar controller fixes that to an extent. All in all though the car responds to bolt ons extremely well, if I was to do it over again I would in a heart beat... I went without a Viper for about 1.5 yrs simply because I couldn't find the right car and price.
