    Throttle sticking

Took my 01 GTS with 20,000 miles on it for a drive today. The throttle is sticking. It feels like cruise control on the highway. In any gear it just assumes the position of the throttle and is very slow to come back down with my foot off the throttle, or the RPM's won't come down at all. Linkage is not binding. Do my throttle plates need to be cleaned? Could it be an IAC issue? It sticks a bit at idle if I bring the RPM's up. Hopefully a quick fix for this. The car runs great other than this issue.

Thanks for any advice and feedback.

    Paul

Although your throttle plates may be sticky, the idle is controlled by the IAC pintle valve's stepper motor. (Right side - just behind and below the throttle body.) I'd say it's more likely to be gummy there. One other possibility is bad intake gaskets causing an uncontrolled air leak.

Thank You Dean. I was thinking about some kind of vacuum leak. I don't hear any strange whistling noises or see anything that would indicate a leak around the intake. It isn't just at idle, it's out on the open road that the throttle sticks.

Use THROTTLE BODY CLEANER to clean it. When done squirt a little WD40 up inside of it and swish it around. Then be aware it can take several FULL DRIVE CYCLES to relearn. If that was the problem. 20K miles is not good longevity performance. Unless letting the car sit around is the issue. Which it could very well be. 20K miles is sort of a garage queen. Things get sticky when you don't drive them.

Haha...Not much open road in the summer with all the tourists around. I do have some back roads the tourists haven't found yet.

Thanks Dave. The previous owner was the guy that made this car a garage ornament. I've driven over 4,000 miles since I bought it last September. 1st issue I've had with the car.

Just to update: I cleaned the throttle bodies yesterday and took it for a ride. The throttle sticking is gone. No more cruise control!! Thanks for the advice.
