ACR CCB's on non ACR Gen V

As the title says ACR CCB's on a non ACR Gen V, I have thought the Gen V's should have had this as an option from the 2013 launch. I was highly disappointed when I went to the reveal in 2012 to see the Gen V released that this was not an option. I don't know why it has always been such a big thing for me, but I just thought if the ZR1 could have them, why couldn't we.

Fast forward to 2017 MY, still no availability of this option. Luckily, the ACR has the option, so we are getting closer. After purchasing the main parts from a fellow forum member I have embarked on the mission to see what really does and does not work. I can tell you that the part number cast onto the knuckles on the rear appeared to be the same, however, when I tried to bolt them up it is clearly different. The extra rotor diameter prevents them from bolting on.

The front knuckles appear to be different part numbers but also seem to work just fine! I have done a test fit and everything fit, then made sure rotation was correct. I also measured the difference of the rotor as it relates to the caliper. It appears almost perfectly centered on the rotor.

I still have to buy the brake pad retainers and bolts for the calipers, as well as rear knuckles, but I am much closer to having what I want. I have knuckles on the way from JonB but we are not certain that they are ACR specific. They are due in this week so I will be able to experiment with them next weekend. I will be using stainless steel lines on the conversion and I plan NOT to try to hook up the brake sensor wires. Luckily the non ACR's don't have the wiring anyway, so as some have had false readings from the sensor, I shouldn't have to deal with it.

I'll update this thread as it progresses. Now off to bolt up my new Tractive Suspension from VE

Here is the front during mock up:

Good luck with your project but excuse me for asking if why didn't you go with the VE BBK or Racing Brake BBK ? As it'll be way less than your project and more pad selection which could be great for both street and track driving.

Quite simple, I got the parts at a reasonable cost. I did not want to go the the VE big brake as I wanted specifically CCBs. I did not go with the Racing Brake because I like the OEM calipers and the OEM compatibility with my '16 ACR. I can always use the Racing Brake replacement rotors but these will most likely last the life of the car. I will track it every now and then maybe, with the ACR I don't plan more than once per year in this car.

I am particular on top of all those reasons

    1. Massive weight savings
    2. Rotors that will last basically FOREVER
    3. Non-existent brake fade

Going CCB on a Gen 5, for all the same reasons Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari, have all been doing so for many years.

Guys like us that really hammer the brakes will need to replace the front rotors at some point. They pit over time which accelerates pad wear. Not sure when that day will come, as they're still going strong after nearly a year of tracking.

There are companies doing resurface work for pits on CCB rotors now. ~150$-200$ a rotor to have it done but as long as the pits are not too deep you can still reuses them and surface then at least two times.

Yes I've heard about this but don't want to be the guinea pig. I'd hate to have a rotor come apart at the end of a straight at 140+mph. And does it change the coefficient of friction, or any other aspect? I'll wait for someone else to prove it out before taking that gamble.

Good luck. Maybe you can post your all in cost on parts as well when you're done, as well as a parts list?
I loved the CCB on my Carbon Edition Z06!

I'll detail everything as soon as I have the final parts required and the final pricing. I hope to get it done in the next week or so but it depends on the knuckles that are on their way are correct or not.

Nice project you have going there Tim!

Great choice! I am just enamored by these CCBs. Great on the street, no dust, but oh at the track they just amaze. Hitting the brakes hard at the very last minute at Laguna turn two, over and over. No fade. That's no small feat.

Some of the more hardcore Corvette track rats here in NorCal have been converting their C6 Z06s to CCBs. These are the fast guys (not quite as fast as the ACR crowd, but close!) so it gives legitimacy to them over iron. Not trying to talk anyone into CCBs, but after fighting with iron brakes on every other track car for years, I finally have the perfect braking package for me.

Tim I have an idea that should allow you to reuse your factory non ACR front knuckles.

  17. #17
All ears They appear to work anyway on the front. I have one more clearance factor to check but didn't see any issues on the first fitment test. It is the back knuckles that are not working. I have to check one are on the caliper that has come to my attention that I have not checked. It didn't appear to be an issue but after looking at the Racing Brake set up they say the modify the caliper to work on all Gen 3-5 front knuckles. Not sure it was hitting though. It bolted on and appeared to be square but I want to be for sure.

Just curious as I like the idea of the VE big brake package set up but is it possible for the VE big brake package to have an option for CCB rotors instead of steel all around? Seems like that would allow you to keep your Sidewinder IIs on. Should be doable as we are just taking about a carbon rotor instead of a steel one, correct? That way no knuckle issues or anything else.

There big brake kit does not use different rear calipers, neither does the racing brake. The rotor is only like a 1/2" different in diameter on the ACR but I like the way it fills the rear wheel. The limitation is the emergency brake caliper. There is already a CCB by Racing Brake that uses the stock rear caliper but does use the ACR front caliper. This will still require a 19" wheel or an 18" wheel that is made to fit the bigger brake. The Sidewinder II won't work for any of the big brake kits that I know.

Okay but I thought the VE big brake kit works with SW2s? The GTSR Blue targa car had the VE big brake kit and was still wearing SW2 rims. I was not sure about the rear calipers but there again, I thought the VE big brake package used different SRT labeled calipers in the back. Might be the same size rotor in the back though.

The ABS programming is also different between CCM & non "CCM cars.

  22. #22
True, but I won't be tracking the car. The calibration is more aggressive for the CCBs. On the street it won't be anything that I will need to worry about, even if I do track the car I still won't really need it as it won't be a maximum effort, that's what the ACR is for.

I guess I should check on that, I had not seen they were compatible but I do not know that for sure.

If you look up the old big brake package threads from VE, they show and mention different calipers and rotors on all 4 corners. Would be cool to have a carbon rotor option for that big brake package as that would be the best of everything.

The VE big brake kit still fits inside the SW2 wheels. Keating had them on his white TA, no problem.

Tim, you are a nut. Modding a TA when you have a perfectly good ACR sitting there with those parts already installed
