I am sure we've all had other drivers doing stupid stuff around us - I'd like to get dash cam to CYA.
Has anyone used one they like? Anything to watch out for?

Gotta go with the Hero Go Pro
Garmin just released a dash cam with GPS. Do not know if it is suited for the application you need.

I'm also curious what people use - been thinking about getting one myself
I am curious as well. A GoPro Hero 3 of any kind or newer (maybe older, I can't verify) could be wired into your car and continuously recording the last 5, 20, or maximum (full memory card) amount of time in loop. So if you have it set to 5 minutes, at 5:01 it re-writes what was 0:01 and continues on. Plus, they're really a fun camera for anything!
You potentially could just get a 64 gb card and plug the GoPro to your cigarette power and just remember to turn it on and record every time you drive. Then, when you get into an accident you only have to remember to turn it off within like 2 hours to ensure you don't over-write the event.
Gopro has a lot of complaints about being poor quality in dark conditions. A dedicated dash cam like the Blackvue gets a lot more praise. The Blackvue is what I am going with.
Yeah I thought about GoPro, but the nighttime seems to be its weakness.
Blackvue seems to be a decent dashcam from what I read.
It is strange there is virtually no market for it in the US.
There are apps and holders for smart phones. Anyone tried one?
I am a BIG fan of my GoPro Hero 3. I haven't had any big problems while taping at night, but it has always been at well lit areas.

These seem to be among the best...all depends on what suits your needs.

Greg,
It's a Audio-Technica PRO24CM mic. I think it was around $80, but Im sure can be found cheaper on amazon or ebay. I am very happy with it. I saw ones that were WAAAAY more pricey and decided I didn't really need that. My exhaust is so loud that I wanted a way for voices (from drivers area) to be heard clearly, and it does a great job of that. I have plenty of vids, but I'll need to grab the laptop with em from a family members home.
dashcam =/= dash camera.
dashcam will record things your are doing in case of a problem. This includes waking up and recording automatically in the event of a motion alarm/alert, and also recording over the card when full, and also automatically marking spots of higher g impacts to not get recorded over. A dashcam should automatically go to sleep to avoid draining the battery when the car is parked, and wake up to record on sound/impact. Other parts of newer dashcams include wifi access and battery protection shutoff to prevent the battery from being drained entirely by the dashcam.
Dashcams have decent low light as well and will mark the date and time, and optionally the GPS location and speed on the card so you can review what happened.
A GoPro is not a dashcam proper, but it is closely related. I have a Blackvue model for running around but I haven't installed it into my Viper yet. The Blackvue's are pretty compact and some have wifi but they have a reputation for overheating easily.
I picked up one of these today via Amazon

My hope is the radar detector pigtail I can fashion to provide power for the dashcam
I'll post up a review.
Have a look at http://www.szswill.com/car-camera.html, the most common dash cameras that available on the markets.
would also watch out that if you get into an accident then your dashcam could also be used against you, could make insurance interesting
True enough, always a risk. I am more concerned with other drives for the most part - I figure that is a bigger source of danger to me LOL.
But, if you are going to be driving like an ass - recording it maynot be the best idea - it does amaze me the stuff people put on Youtube.
