Gen 2 air filter results from K+N test

Has anyone tried these K+N filters? (in place of the stock paper/foam regular viper filter)

I was impressed by an almost 15whp increase from air filter alone.

Years ago Team Viper was asked about swapping filters, if it would increase HP... If I remember correctly, their reply was if they could have made a gain by using a different filter they would have.

Also note that website has a link in the text to help you get to K & N... they have a dog in the fight... LOL
Use the Report a post feature... It works!

I think I have the original air filter from the factory in my 19 year old viper (So I am looking for a filter).

When I touch the foam on the air filter, my finger sticks to the foam and pulls a chunk of foam off.

I will save the original filter so when I sell the car in 15 years, the new owner can stick their finger on it.

Well, the gen2 ACR were listed as 10 more HP and torque than the regular GTS/RT and the only difference was smooth tubes and K&N filters so really nothing surprising there.

So Viper Girl, it will seems that Team Viper don't know the history of their own car too well

I've seen pics of older race vipers and I noticed that the teams used stock airboxes with the rain water drain/collector removed and covered. With the addition of smooth tubes, it made the same HP as the full K&N setup. The JMB "Long" or Extended Cold air setup has been tested over and over to be the BEST intake for gen1-2.

And it, aside from the Vipair, is one of the only true cold air intakes for the Gen 2 Viper, that actually alters the air draw location.

I've been thinking of getting a JMB for my '01 ACR. But being as it's an ACR it already has the smooth tubes and K&N's, so would going with the JMB make any difference or just make it look much better?

The JMB relocates the air draw to the nose of the car which one would suspect to be positive pressure. Others have claimed the NACA duct area is under negative pressure at speed. So therefore the relocation of the air draw is an important change.

I wrote the article and have back to backed (within minutes) K&N filters to stock on 3 different cars and have yielded 10-20whp gains.

The filters aren't that expensive. Go to a dyno and back to back it for yourself if you don't believe it. Once you do I'm sure you'll be a believer and put K&N on everything you own like i do.

I have replaced my OEM paper filters with K&N ones. I wouldn't say I felt any difference, but my worry always was that the oil would foul things after the intakes. This is usually the case with cars that have Air Flow Meters. If that happens, you end up losing power as the ECU would pick up wrong readings from the MAFs and adapt accordingly.

I am not sure how effective open cone type filters are. Depends on the air duct design. The last thing you need is your filters sucking in warmer air from the engine bay instead of the intake ducts ramming air in from the outside.

That's an urban myth. I've run K&N filters on over 10 MAF equipped cars for years with no issues. Here's K&Ns take on the issue:

    http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm

I guess if you don't follow K&Ns cleaning & recharging procedure and drench the element in oil then immediately drive the car before the soaked filter dries you could possibly have a problem. Likewise another brand of oiled filter or oiled foamies could cause a problem, but I've never had a single issue with K&N.

I despise "hot air intakes". While cone filters usually have more surface area (& airflow) a poor design that does not take in ambient air and sucks hot engine bay air will greatly hurt the cars performance. Most "cold air intakes" are poorly designed.

After taking the time to read through what was posted and shown via that motoiq article I realize now what I really need to do and specifically what to replace. That article is much appreciated.

Edit: I just checked under the hood to see if I had K&N filters and apparently the filter cover wasn't put back on correctly since I purchased from the dealer. I corrected this yet it was a royal pain taking the whole thing off and out. Sometime in the future I'll be purchasing the JMB cold air setup for ease of maintenance and convenience.
